I can recommend the Sig RCS and the Colt Defender, which I have recent experience with. Both can be had for well under $1K with a little auction surfing. The Defender is a super shorty, which functions very well. The RCS has a Commander length slide with an Officer frame. Sig makes a very good 1911, with extra touches that don't come on other 1911s.
