Compact Scope for the S&W 15-22

I would appreciate some feed back regarding a compact scope that would:
1. Cost less than $100.
2. Be able to see the bullet holes on the target @ 100 yds.
3. Conventional scope vs. Red Dot?
Any advice is welcomed.

"Cheap" Scope

Check out Primary Arms web site. I assume you know that a Red Dot will not show .224 Bullet Holes at 100 yds and a regular optical scope will probably need to be of good optical quality and at least 10X to do it. (unless you use "Shoot and See" targets).

That is indeed a tall order for $100. I really like my 1X4 Nikon Monarch African, but I can't actually see 22 bullet holes at 100yds and it cost more than $100. On that budget, I would think more like 25 yards. At least for starters. JMO.. Ron

I've been using the UTG 3x12x44 compact swat scope w/36 color mil dot cross hairs. It was $104 on amazon and is a great scope, especially for the price. It holds zero, is very very clear, eye relief is great, and is very well built. I did a ton of research on scopes in the $100-$150 range, and it was what I ended up choosing. Primary arms does have some nice stuff, but everything seems to be out of stock. I recommend the UTG, you will be very happy.

Just keep shooting until you see a large hole from your grouping.

Are you sure it's not the mounting or the 15-22 itself that is causing the problem?

Pressure on the quad rail is well known to cause shooting errors on the 15-22.

I was leaning towards a UTG 3-9x32 Compact CQB, but I'm not sure
I'll be able to see hit @ 100yds.

The one I mentioned really is a great scope. I was skepticle at first, but after reading a bunch of reviews I decided to pull the trigger, and I'm glad I did.

I have a 3x9 and can definitely not see .22 holes at 100yds. after a few I can see the grouping, but not individual holes

So very true. It's going to take a 12x scope and then you still may not see individual holes on plain paper targets.

If one wants to see holes in distant targets, that's what spotting scopes are for.

I put on a Baraska 3-9x42 BDC drum contour. Has both black and red illuminated cross hairs. I like the scope but can I see holes at a 100...nope. But then again with glasses and clear covers on I'm lucky I can see at 60. Oh yeah, $99.00 at Gander Mountain.

I personally ended up pulling the trigger on this. It ended up being a little more than I wanted to spend, but from the reviews, I think I'll be happy with it.

went with (UTG 30mm SWAT 3-12X44 Compact IE Scope with AO Mil-dot, 36 Colors EZ-TAP) a little heavy, only been to range once with it on zeroed very easy, was able to see 22 holes at 25-40 meters through sight on 12 power didn't check lower power.

If you want to shoot paper at 100yds and use a rifle scope like a spotting scope, then I would forget about the notion of a "compact" scope.

I'd suggest something around 20x. Simmons and BSA both make dime store optics in that magnification range for around $100.

+1 ... You can definitely see the holes @ 50yds, I haven't tried it @ 100yds though. Here's what it looks like mounted:
