i have never been a springfield fan. i bought a sig 1911 when they first came out,not impressed. after 500rds it still wouldn't feed a full magazine of anything, and tried every mag i owned. somewhere around 20. never owned a smith 1911, but they have a great warranty, and that sounds important to you. could also go with the original,colt. they are doing much better quality wise that years ago. i own a dan wesson and sold one of my colts after i had had it for a while. they have gotten pricy since i purchased mine though. i also like sti and have some of them. most everything else is going to cost a fair amount of money. good luck with your search. btw,been shooting them for over 40yrs now.

I just bought a Springfield Range Officer more than I wanted to spend but ain't nothing cheap anymore. So I will pick up a couple of Wilson mags and go shooting.
My under $400.00 brand new Rock Island functions perfectly.
When I was shopping 1911's, my research led me to RIA, Para and Springfield mostly.
None of the designer or boutique 1911's in the $1,000.00 plus range impressed me too much.

When I was searching for a 1911, I had narrowed my search down to S&W (Stainless), Springfield Armory (Range Officer or Loaded) & Dan Wesson. The DW's always seemed to be out of my price range. Managed to find a LNIB S&W 1911 first in my price range, but could have easily ended up with an S/A. S&W has excellent Customer Service, and I have heard the same for S/A. Wish you luck in your search, and would love to hear & see what you get.
Off topic- consider a 3rd Gen. S&W. If you must have a 1911, search out a used Ed Brown/Les Baer/Wilson Combat- the holy trinity.

HUMMMM---If you are looking for a real 1911 that you will never sell then buy youownself a Colt--even a Norinco--a shooter.
THEN find yourself a good Smith--I reccommend Vandenberg custom.
Tell him what you want--new GOOD guts, short/long trigger (I like short GI triggers) put another $700 + into it and fall in love.
Below are some he has worked up for me. you can't see what makes them great--trust me on them though.
