Contemplating buying a zero turn mower.

I bought a Gravely XT52 with the 25 horse Kohler motor. I read a lot of consumer reviews on 5 or 6 brands and the Gravely looked the best out of the lot. The only thing I wish I had done was purchased the the commercial version of the same mower as it had taller wheels and probably would be a tad smoother ride. We mow around 4½ acres 3 times every two weeks. I bought it new in 2018 and it has never been back to the dealer for any repairs. New blades twice a year keeps it mowing clean and I do sharpen them once every 3-4 times I mow.

Zero turn mowers are my specialty. I've been a member of Lawnsite since May 30, 2001 and have owned a couple dozen ztrs. I've cut for money and I've bought and sold mowers because it's an easy way to make money when you have the location and know how. Dizzy Dean said it's not bragging if you can do it and I can do it. ;)

After that big intro here are my words of wisdom - most all ztrs are well made so buy the dealer. I see you are in Montana so you probably don't have multiple power equipment dealers nearby - find the best one that is most convenient and give them first shot.

For 4 acres do not consider a 42" deck. You would hate it and trade soon. Buy once, cry once. 61" deck is what you need and 25hp is adequate - Kawasaki 730cc is good, 801cc is better. Unless you are bushhogging you don't need the gas hog 1000cc. FR/FS series engines are good, FX series are best. I'm talking Kawasaki - Kohlers, Briggs Vanguard and the proprietary engines some mowers use are good but Kaws lead the industry and parts are easily available.

I've owned Dixie Choppers, Big Dogs, Hustlers, Bob-Cat bought new and many other brands that I've traded on - I've never had a bad mower but I don't buy junk. In a population center like Louisville used mowers are plentiful and craigslist is a good place to look. Estate auctions too but I do better one on one vs auction fever.

If I'm mowing 4 acres I'm buying a Hustler Z series 61" or Big Dog Diablo - same mower just red. I'd look first for a well kept used machine w/under 200 hours but a well kept machine with under 1000 hours still has a lot of life left, just buy it right.

If the deal is on an Exmark, Kubota, Scag, Toro, Grasshopper, Ferris, Deere, Bad Boy et al, take it - major brand commercial mowers are all good as long as they have not been abused but I like Hustler best - made in Kansas by Excel industries, one of the first to build ztrs and they perfected the design long ago and they don't change specs just for the sake of change - keeps parts plentiful.

Do not overlook a Hustler Raptor if your 4 acres isn't super bumpy - homeowner grade but with a welded deck, Kaw engine, serviceable transmission and comes in deck sizes from 42"to 61". I'd still hold out for a super Z or Diablo but a Raptor will make your yard look good and won't break the bank. I use a Big Dog 48" fastrac on my 3/4 acre. 30 minutes if I piddle around.

This is my Big Dog with power bar steering, same as a Hustler Trimstar. twist either hand grip forward for forward and backward for reverse. Easy to steer one handed and will turn in it's length. Best mower Hustler ever made that was not a commercial success. I bought this new in 2012 for less than the price of the Kaw FR651/21hp and the Hydro Gear 3100 transmission - helps that I've bought about a dozen mowers from SIE power equip - I get cash deals on used equip trade ins and best price on new mowers. At age 71 I'm expecting this Big Dog to last me as long as I care to use it considering it only gets used about 25 hours a year.

A friend has had a ZTR Kubota for over 5 years and was happy with it until he was almost 70. The banging and bumps took it's toll and he traded the Kubota for a ZTR with suspension. He says it's a lot easier on his body.

Zero turn Mowers

I mow 6acres ounce a week at my gun club. We have a Scagg turf tiger and A Hustler. Both are 52" Zero turns, W/ 30 HP Kawasaki Eng.'s. I'll give the edge to the Hustler for comfort. Both are good machines. Dennis V.

Go big or stay home. Rides like a Cadillac.

I’ve had a Gravely for the last ten years, very happy with it. It’s the entry level commercial model, so bigger tires and a heavier gauge deck. It’s been a good performer, only malfunction was the starter solenoid went bad this year.

Well a lot of questions on terrain etc. The area I would be cutting is all level with a very small slope down to make it easy to irrigate. To be honest I've never had to cut the place more than 4 times in a season. It IS dry here. And I would only cut a 1/2 at the most 2 times. It is a small field of about two acres. My wife has some flower beds but I mostly use a trimmer around them. The little field was a large garden that we let go natural. Too many deer for too much work. so...I would only be spending 12 hours or so a year. I have to also acquire a regular walk behind mower for inside the fenced in garden near the fence. I found a couple commercially used Kubotas but they both have more than 600 hours, one is 60 inch the other 54 both with a 30/30 warranty...30 feet or 30 seconds...whichever comes first. LOL

Heck, based on that usage I would hire someone to do it.

I'm inclined to agree with hiring it out. Based on the description above I don't see that it justifies spending big bucks on a big zero turn just to mow it 4 times a year.

Heck, here in my neck of the woods I have to mow as much as 5 or 6 times a month during spring and early summer, and still have to mow weekly during summer through fall. That's when a quality zero turn makes a difference in time savings.

I've got 5 level acres and my cub ZT 54 does an admirable job, does it in 1/2 the time of my old wheel horse 48" deck and other than oil changes and blade resharpening I've had 0 problems...all done in less than 2 hours...been doing it for over 5 years

When I lived in Md I seemed to always be cutting grass ...60 inches of rain and 8 acres of grass. There are companies I could hire to cut grass. They are all town based. I live 20 miles out. They wanted to charge me a dollar a mile coming and going...LOL. And yeah I get it.. Rather just cut it myself. I think I am going to buy the Kubota 42 inch...aybe It's not like I only have an hour to cut it..I am retired...I think. Or I could just send my wife out to do it...yeah!! A GREAT idea...and just think of all the exercise she'd get

Kubota makes very nice machines; after reading the description of cutting needs should serve you well, would still encourage you to try the 42" and 48" deck size(comparison). Happy mowing

Zero turn

I mow 4 acres and was using a 54” cub cadet lawn tractor. Took me 4 hrs and about 4 gallons of gas. Finally broke down and bought a zero turn. SCAG turf tiger 61” deck liquid cooled, fuel injected kawasaki. Takes 1 1/2 hrs and comfortable. I would buy another one without thinking twice. Made in the USA.

I've spent quite a bit of time in Wyoming over the last 50 years and I'm honestly amazed that you have 4 acres mowable with a lawn mower. What happened to all the rocks??? Or did you have dirt trucked in?

I'm kidding but half serious.

Yes we actually have real dirt. and a small 5 acre woods too. There are rocks but in the dry ground and the 500 ft cliff(sandstone) behind/ front of the house. We grew string lima wax and kidney beans taters and corn in the 2 acre piece to sell at the farmers market till the deer took over. I shotgun 'em in the enclosed garden behind the house. I waste 410 shells on 'em if they get in the household garden. We live on it...and maybe a deer or two(whitetails keep the mule deer away)

Finally bought a ZT mower. Not the most expensive but a 54 inch machine I got at Tractor supply. It is branded Bad Boy.. Guess we'll see. Wife likes it so I hope to let her cut grass. I really need a mower now... in the last two weeks we have gotten more rain than we did in the last two years. Not a joke Even raining this morning

I have a Skag ( terrible name ) Freedom Z 48” cut with 18 ( I think ) horsepower highly recommended Kawasaki engine.
Couldn’t be happier.

Know that there basically 3 grades or levels of ZT mowers:
Commercial
Mid-Level
Residential

Mine is a Mid-Level grade that has the better sealed bearings and stronger frame similar to the higher grade.
In your case, I would not get a residential model.
