I grew up in Chicago and moved out to the suburbs when I got married. Unfortunately I still live in Crook County. When this tax went into affect we started buying our "sweetened beverages" outside of Crook County.
The real issue in Illinois is the horrendous unfunded pension obligations the state has. No soda pop tax is going to fix that. We can thank the Chicago Democrats for that, they promised everything to everyone but now there isn't any money available to cover the cost. The State should declare bankruptcy, try and get out from under these pension obligations and start over. That would be a cr*ppy deal for the people collecting these pensions but I don't see an alternative. Unfortunately the Democrats in power would NEVER allow that to happen.
