Would someone explain cookies in computer lingo that an old man can understand. I read that you have to clear cookies or accept one and don't know what it means. Thanks. Yes I know I'm dumb.

Deanodog someone will most likley be better to explain it better but I'll give it a try a cookie is a web site or link that you visited and your computer will store it in it's history. If you don't clear your cookie's out every now and then it will slow your computer down.

The first sentence states, "An HTTP cookie is a packet of information sent by a server to a World Wide Web browser and then sent back by the browser each time it accesses that server". Keep in mind that the World Wide Web Browser, is the browser you're using on you computer (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.etc.) The server is where the web site you're visiting is running. The cookie is information that is put on your computer for various reasons.

Cookies

Many web sites want to keep track of your visits.

To do this, they send a tiny computer program to your computer, and it stays there. The tiny program is referred to as a cookie. It contains data that allows that allows the website to recognize you when you return.

A good example is a forum that automatically logs you in, when you checked "remember me'.

You can control whether or not you computer allows the cookies to be sent to you. How you do it depends on the browser you use.

You can also delete all cookies at any time. As above, how depends on browser.

Firefox describes them as "Cookies are stored on your computer by websites you visit and contain information such as site​ pref​eren​ces ​or logi​n stat​us."

I'm not either...but I have Windows XP and to it clean-up I go to START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Clean up.

You might run Disk Defragmenter > Analyze it will tell you if you have to defragment then just click on it. HTH, Preston

I also use XP and I think this is your answer, please anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

Usually before I quit using my computer for the day I click on Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete, Delete, Then place a check next to: Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, History, next click Delete, and then Ok.

I believe this clears everything you were doing that session and helps your computer from getting cookie crumbs as Sip said.

I have my privacy setting set to block all cookies, just dont like the dang things. The few sites that require cookies just dont get visited.
