Corpus Christi and the USS Lexington

I was stationed on the sub tender there in the 80's right after they opened up the sub base. There wasn't much in Kingsland back in those days. I spent 2 years at SWFPAC just before I retired in '93.

My son, also a submariner, was stationed at Kings Bay back in the late '80's on SSBN641 and 655. I think my sea stories might have influenced his decision. 😁

Has anyone been to the Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg TX? I think Fredericksburg is west of Austin and the hometown of Fleet Admiral Nimitz. Wife and I are thinking of a road trip this summer out West and that might be worth a side trip.

Heading out I-10? Stop by P-Cola at the Naval Aviation Museum. For me it brings back more memories than just aircraft and maintenance. The F2H-2P BANSHEE at the museum sat in the park in downtown Vero Beach, Florida. I use to play on it back then as a kid. Also the snack bar has all the squadron plaques from the "O" Club at NAS Cubi Point, Philippines. Kind of neat to eat your lunch there among names of folks you know.

I have. It is absolutely worth the trip if you are a Pacific War buff. Part of the museum is housed in the old Nimitz Hotel where Admiral Nimitz grew up. There anr many fascinating exhibits, including an intact Japanese midget submarine from the Pearl Harbor attack, a PT boat, and the third atomic bomb, which would have been dropped had not Japan surrendered when they did. My cousin and I spent the better part of a day going through the museum. Fredericksburg also has many excellent places to shop, eat, and drink. My advice: Go.

I-10 West and two, maybe three days in P-cola. And, yeah, I'll be going to the NAM as often as my wonderful bride (hope she reads this part!) can put up with the visits. When I was going thru AOCS at Main Side in 1970, the museum was a largish size shack with a paint faded F3J Fury parked outside. There was a F8F Bearcat in one hangar under going restoration. And there was a full sized cut-away of a PBY Catalina in the Sea Survival School. Now the NAM is a Nationally/Internationally recognized museum of the first order.

Thanks much. Would you recommend finding accommodations in the Fredericksburg area or staying in Austin and traveling to Fredericksburg? It's about an hour and half from Austin to Fredericksburg via Johnston City. Easy drive.

It's been over ten years since I visited Fredericksburg, so my advice may be dated. I know that the suburbs west of Austin have grown considerably since then, so that the once pastoral drive along Highway 290 may be more congested. If you are planning to visit San Antonio, access to Fredericksburg is quicker using I-10 and Highway 87. I was staying in San Antonio when I visited Fredericksburg, and it was a pleasant day trip. If you decide to stay in Fredericksburg, there are a couple of worthwhile side trips you can take. The LBJ Ranch is about 15 miles east on Highway 290, and Enchanted Rock is about 25 miles north on Highway 965. What is Enchanted Rock? It's, well, a giant rock, 400 feet high and 1/2 mile long that you can climb if you wish. (It's pretty strenuous I hear. I've not done it.). If you're into country music, Luckenbach where Waylon, Willie, and the Boys hung out, is about 10 miles east. The whole "town" is a post office and store. Blink, and you'll miss it. I can't recommend accommodations in Fredericksburg, as I've never stayed there. Have a nice trip!

BTW, it's Johnson City. No "Ts" allowed in LBJ territory! ;)

Oh my, I received my corporate membership cards today.... this made my day :D :D :D
