Found a very nice 4" Model 53 at the Wanenmacher show in Tulsa this morning. Fired very little but I believe the stocks on it are incorrect. They are standard football targets with silver washers. With the SN K700XXX I believe this gun dates to 1966 and as such should have the diamond targets. Correct?

Diamond target stocks made of American walnut would be correct for your Model 53. See photo below and click on it for a better look. The revolver shown below is a Model 53-2 (3-screw frame), K700447, shipped on April 10, 1968.

Thank you Bill. I’ve got a possible source for a correct set of stocks for it. I’ll be sure to verify they are American walnut. Btw, our guns are about 60 difference on the SN. I may letter it to see when it shipped, now I’m curious. I would have thought it would have been earlier than mid 68.

Is it possible that with 68 being the year the Diamond targets were discontinued, that mine being a higher number than yours it is one of the first to come with standard non-Diamond targets??

Anything is possible, but since the directive to delete the diamond on all NT and KT stocks was issued on December 28, 1967, I think most target stocks in 1968 would have had the diamond around the escutcheon and nut.

You can ask Roy on the S&WCA Forum for a shipping date, and he will provide the month and year your 53 was shipped.
