Correction: Unknown gun.......????

Got a man on the phone & got it all squared away........

I shopped at the last show for several things. Had a list......list distracted me somewhat. I bought a set of tools from a fellow who had a boxed M-27 (???) 5"......(should read unknown model)

Donna, who always pays more attention to what is said (and remembers it!!!) than I do recalls the fellow with the gun said it was a very short production run......600 maybe??? She said it looked new to her.

There were many more than 500 5" 27-2s made, and this was well before the era of commemoratives and special runs. The one in that length that comes to mind is the FBI commemorative, but there were 3200 made in the -3 era.

I agree with Alan that the 5" Model 27-2 is neither rare nor even scarce. On the other hand, they do not seem to show up on the market all that often. I've wanted one for a very long time and finally had a chance to pick up a very nice one a few months ago at the ridiculous price of $450 OTD. Here are a couple photos:

Still looking for my Model 27. The 3 1/2" barrel length is my first choice but the 5" is a close second. Yours is gorgeous.

Here's a picture of my 27-2 5" from 1964. Personally, I think the 5" barrel balances the N-Frame size better than any other barrel length.

From what I have observed the greatest number of 5" Model 27s seem to be the -2 version. In addition there are a relatively high percentage of the 5" that guns are Nickeled and cased. I have one of these. I wish I had numbers (of guns), but in the past few years there have been an inordinate number of posts on this Forum which have led to this conclusion.

The 5 inch barrel really looks "right" on the S&W N frame revolvers.
I found this lonely 5 inch 27-2 in the used case at a big gun store. She was dirty and weary ugly rubber grips. Found out it had the original wood stocks too. The gun would be about 95% if it weren't for serious holster wear on the trigger guard and freckling on the barrel from some type of spray or mist (blood?).
It did clean up well and is a favorite shooter.

OK......back to Donnas superior memory......during additional discussion, she claims the gun was not .357, but .44mag.........??? Made in the 1950s....????

If it was a factory 5" model 29 from the pinned/recessed era, it is a rare bird. Many of these were ordered and sold by H H Harris in Chicago, a prominent dealer of odd and unusual S & Ws.
