Last November I got a little dog from the local animal shelter, probably a terrier/chihuahua mix, and about 8 years old. She has been through the wringer, and was very unsure and confused of what was happening to her.

By the end of the first day that I had her, one would have thought i had had her since she was a puppy. She followed me everywhere and trusted me completely. I named her Lily, after the flower. I would not take a million dollars for her.

I am blessed in that I can take her to work with me, and I usually bring her in about every other day.

I have a small battery operated light mounted on my bedroom wall that I turn on after I get in bed so I can get her blankets adjusted just right. When that gets done, I just reach over and turn it off. Last night, just as I was turning the light off, I must have moved my hand in front of it and made a moving shadow on the wall. Lily saw it and jumped out of her spot on the bed, and she was on full alert, ears standing straight up, peering intently, but not barking. Lily moved to put herself directly between me and where she saw the shadow move, guarding and protecting me with her little body. She stayed there like that until I told her everything was OK. Then after a moment or two, she moved back to her spot and I put the blankets back over her and told her what a good dog she was, protecting ol' Daddy like that. Then I petted her little head for a long time and we went to sleep.

She apparently wasn't sure if she saw anything or not, but she was ready to protect me just in case. So sweet. What a great little girl.

Warren I understand your feelings for her . For several years I wanted a black tri- Australian Shepard. I saw friends paying as much as $12,000 for them . There was no way I could afford that . About thanksgiving , 5 yrs ago I found my dream dog , a puppy abandoned , living under an old camp trailer in the dirt . She has been with me since . I always tell people " be careful " when they come up to her . They ask , " does she bite ". I tell them " no , but she will steal your heart " ! Regards , Paul

You will hear from most K-9 handlers and protection dog trainers that small dogs are generally as good as any of the traditional protection breeds in alerting you and being good watch dogs. I have seen yorkies, Jack Russels, little mixes like Warren's Lilly, fire up on a bite decoy like a hardened Belgian Malonis!!

It's not the size of dog in the fight, but the size of fight in the dog!

My wife is one of the local Schnauzer rescue ladies. Our latest keeper is young Benji, he was given up by the wife of a divorce and had been beaten by the ex-husband. Apparently she did not need a dog once she was divorced? For the first few days, he growled at my son and I any time when entered into the room and prepared to defend my wife or daughter. Now, he just licks our hands and tries to play, but any stranger of any gender still starts a chain of uncontrolled barking until someone in the family tells him that it is OK. I think we may have another good watch Schnauzer. On the other side of the door he sounds like a rabid Rottweiler. Only problem is that he is still spry enough to leap onto the kitchen counter. Time to move the Oreo's!

Well Over half the job description of any good 'watchdog' is simply to alert the master of A perceived threat and get between him/her and it. Some
Breeds can take the issue much further, but really, i'd Say 90% of it is the dogs sense of awareness and sensory abilities. Lily did her job. Guh girrrl!

Just a wonderful story and a smart puppy. I cannot and don't want to think of a world without dogs. Who ever said "Man's Best Friend" said it all. It does not matter if your away for 5 minutes or five months, they are just as happy to see you.
