I rarely carry a gun around my house other then when arriving home with my EDC, however, I have a covert loaded gun
stashed in nearly every room of the house.
No kids, whenever grand kids visit from Out of state I gather up all the guns and secure them.

I know people who do this but I'll have no part of it. Whether you have children or not, the disaster factor is just too high. I recently traded for a 340PD and this revolver is with me at all times, no exceptions. I'd been denigrating these alloy frame revolvers ever since they came out. Silly bullet restrictions, blast shields, recoil, etc. Wow, was I stupid! How did I ever live without this thing? Having something on you literally 24/7 makes things much easier. You can even carry this everywhere as a second gun and STILL argue all you want about which gun/caliber/ammo is best as a holster gun. Having a gun on you at all times is still the best solution and my 340PD has made that a reality for me.

"covert" hiding

It's just me and the wife home also. And while certainly not every room I always have 1 or 2 in the bedroom and sometimes 1 near the front door. My biggest fear is somebody shows up unexpected with a nosy kid when I'm not home. Don't underestimate a kids ability to find stuff. If there was a hidden gun in my parents house I would have found it. I'm guilty of getting lazy and leaving my mancave door unlocked and the safe open at times. I hate it when parents bring kids over and expect ME to childproof MY house and behave in a fashion they approve. I give a standard warning & house rules whenever kids are here. I AM NOT THE KIDS PARENT, YOU ARE. It's your job to control, supervise, babysit, and entertain NOT MINE.

The reality of my life is that it does not revolve solely around firearms as I suspect is the case with quite a few of this forum's members. We have non ironic threads advocating carry to the head,in the shower, ect and I can't help but wonder where does these folks live and with whom as neighbors?
I keep loaded firearms in strategic locations around the house but don't obsess about not being within arms reach of one in the 40 feet that separates the front door from the bedroom....that folks is paranoia, plain and simple.
We all love guns or we wouldn't be here but the level of intensity I see at times on this and other firearms forums border on obsessiveness and insanity.
Yeah, yeah I know....it's our right ,use it or lose it, better to have it and not need it than the other way around and all the other overused platitudes but at what point do we ask ourselves are we a gun's master or is it mastering us?

Rant over and thank you for your time......

When you wear a holstered pistol around the house on your hip it has the tendency to ding up momma's prized dining room set. It's cheaper in the long run to stash several handguns around the house.

I live in an apartment with a little dog who warns me when someone is at the door (which is steel).

A Model 10-5 is in the head of my bed. My carry J-frame is lightly concealed next to the door, about seven feet from my computer desk, where I can usually be found through the day.

The 640 goes in my pocket anytime I step out the door.

My shotgun and .22 rifle are in the bedroom closet. Neither is loaded.

That's it. I respectfully decline either to keep a gun on my person all the time when I'm in my apartment or have multiple firearms stashed all over the place. I'm old, I live in a seniors' apartment complex where (nosy) neighbors keep their eyes peeled, and I rarely venture far from home. When I do go out I'm invariably armed.

I just will not live at DefCon 3 all the damn time. If that results in my demise, you can say you told me so.

Here endeth the old-guy homily.

My only question for the OP is: does he leave these concealed loaded weapons unsecured when he and/or his family leave the home for the myriad daily reasons we all do: shopping, gas up the car, go to a movie, get a haircut, etc.?

If so, this is reckless and cannot be condoned.

I live in a 2story+bsmt home. Dog is my early warning system. I keep a pistol in V-Line vault on all 3 levels so never more than 30ft away at most, takes about 3sec to access, I'm always armed when I leave.

Maybe it is just me, but for me if my firearms aren't under my direct control they're stored properly so they can't come easily under someone else's control. That means on my person or in my safe or locked cases when traveling.

I feel that with rights come equal responsibilities. Keeping my firearm properly secured is one of those responsibilities. I know others that have guns stashed here and there in their home. I wonder if the collect them all and put them in the safe when they leave home. I know if they don't and their home is broken into within minutes those hides will all be searched and the guns will be gone. They will be gone into the hands of those we all don't want to have firearms. Then comes the call to the police and your insurance company. Ouch. Then there is the kids thing but I feel if children are properly taught that should never be an issue. I grew up when guns were hung on a rack or put in an unlocked cabinet. I survived as did all my friends.

When at home I carry or have my firearm within reach and my other firearms are kept in the safe. Of course that is just me and I would hate to see a law passed forcing anyone to lock up their firearms. It is a personal choice we can all make on our own without the help of government.

Why? The op, as do we all have an reasonable expectation that if our house is properly secured and firearms are not strewn about, that a safe is only a secondary level of protecting them.
By you making a cover statement and judgment that anything less than a safe is reckless smacks of elitism and exactly what firearms owners face from the anti gunners.

I don't see that level of concern for weapon safety as elitism, but as one view of responsible gun ownership. One of many. I don't own a safe and don't lock up my few remaining guns when I leave home to go to the grocery, but I can be respectful of this poster's concern.

Guess I'm just a non-elitist. Which figures for an elderly hillbilly like me, I suppose.

I too think there should be room for various opinions on the subject. Like shouldazzed I have several loaded firearms around the place and I don't gather them up and lock them away when I leave the house for a routine mission. If I were that paranoid or fearful of my neighborhood, I would move. I have used firearms for more than 60 years now and I refuse to become a slave to them. There have always been 'bad guys' and morons loose in our society and if I am home I will deal with them as needed, and if not, that is why I allow myself to be roughed up by the insurance company. After 70 years of "fight'n the fight" my societal moral conscience and need to save the planet for future generations angst is at low tide.

I too only lock away any of the handguns I choose to place around the house in my safe when I'm going on Vacation or leaving the house for several days.My dwelling is in a gated community, neighbors are all predominately ex NYS cops and Firemen ....we're a tight unit and I've learned from them.
I'm not a slave to some uptight and paranoid philosophy of fear.

My first thought with this is that leaving guns around the house opens you up to the possibility of having them stolen. I am pretty sure that the experienced thieves know all the good places in your house to hide a gun and since I can’t afford to replace them I lock all my guns except the one I am using at the moment up.

Having said that I live in a 720 square foot apartment, I can just about put a gun on the dining room table and reach it from anywhere in the house :D. So, I generally have the one out at home and it’s either on my night stand, on the end table next to my chair or on the computer desk in the den.

I dont carry at home and the closest gun is upstairs in my bedroom. My neighborhood is upper class middle aged white. We have arguments about who's dog poop is on whos lawn. Yea anything can happen and a plane can also land on me as I drive home.

If you do carry and/or keep one in every room thats fine too. At home I wear sweats or light sweat shorts. Barely stay on with a pack of smokes in the pocket

I always have my EDC with me and I usually leave a .38 snubbie stashed in a drawer so the wife will have something handy when she's home alone...she gets home from work before I do. It's a risk leaving it there when we're both gone during the day, but I'd rather take that risk than leave her defenseless at home. I have an alarm system and a German Sheppard on duty as well. Everything else stays locked up in the safe.

My concern with having so much access to firearms around the house is carelessness. When I leave the house, even just to feed livestock, I am armed more than likely my 28-2. When I am inside it is usually within reach. But with so many pistols around it just multiplies the possibilities. I do have long guns and shot guns around but most are in the safe. I might be the only one but I have scared myself at times because of my comfort level and always remind myself whether it is me or someone else's mistake, once the bullet leaves the barrel either intentionally or unintentionally there is no turning back.

I used to work with a guy who loved the old Charter Arms .44 Specials. He said he was usually able to buy them (used) cheaply, and he stashed them in his car, and around his house. I always made sure he knew when I was planning on visiting him.

Dave
