I went to Six Gun Territory in Florida twice as a kid. Once in 1965 with my parents and once in 1966 as a young Naval academy cadet age 12 on an Academy field trip there. On that last occasion I got to meet and speak with Kirby Grant (Sky King). He even gave me one of his spent blank cartridges from the western shootout they just did. It was a fun place. Old western type town, stagecoaches, bankrobbers vs the marshal shootouts, stunt men rolling off roofs. Would give liberals a brain hemorrhage today with all the shootouts and gun play....but we loved it.
Unfortunately I didn't get any pics of me with Sky King. But I was telling one of my former high school classmates Michele Kelso Curtis about it, and she told me she went there about the same time in 1965 and got her picture taken with movie and t.v. star Jock Mahoney. Here's her pic with him.
Jock Mahoney was a movie and t.v. star. He played Tarzan, westerns and I especially remember him starring as Yancy Derringer in the old t.v. western series that ran only one year from 1958 to 1959. He was a Mississippi river boat gambler type of guy in old New Orleans that used a four barrel Sharps Derringer and dressed like a dandy. Maybe because he dressed fancy, they used the name for him of "Yancy" and of course his last name of "Derringer" was a reference to his four barreled Sharp's derringer he used. So the title "Yancy Derringer" makes one think of "Fancy with Derringer". Did they do that on purpose? I have no idea. But it makes sense if they did.
