At gunshow yesterday one dealer had several certified pre owned Sig Sauer p229. LE trade ins refurbished by Sig, in red box, and guaranteed for 1 year. Never owned a Sig due to price but these were about 1/2 of a new one. With a 22lr conversion from Sig at $300, my idea is you could have a 9 or 40 SIG 229 that can also be used for economical target practice at less than a new one. Any thoughts or experience with CPO sigs?

If it is a red box, CPO, buy with confidence. Over the years I have seen many "red box" that were still new as they were sold to a LE agency, but never issued. Than traded in when a new trade in purchase was made.
The red box is one of the best deals going if you want a Sig.......IMHO

Some time ago I purchased a CPO P226 - an old mud-rail gun. It was pretty obvious that the gun had seen a lot of rounds. I believe it's barrel was well worn. The gun was not particularly accurate, but it was serviceable, and not too bad looking. The magazine supplied with the gun had a glued-on rubber base pad and the spring was completely shot. I replaced the mag spring and recoil springs immediately. They needed it.

If the gun was "certified" by SIG Sauer in that condition I guess I would wonder if it somehow slipped through their inspection, or just what their standards really were? I'd be sure to look the gun over carefully before you buy.

I have had a 229 9mm for years and fired many thousands of rounds through it. I trust it completely. One thing you need to be aware of, you can convert a 40 to 9, but not the other way. That is what I have been led to understand over the years.

This Sig P239 .40 S&W is a CPO, it is a fine pistol for hiking.

That depends on which 229 you have. If you have one of the newer 229-1 9mm sigs (ships with 15 round mags). Then you can convert up to 40, or 357 sig. Or you can buy the p229 classic in 22lr and convert up to, 9mm, 40, or 357 sig. The older 229 9mms cannot convert up (13 round mags)

I also previously owned a red box cpo p229 in 40 and if you would have never known it wasn't brand new from looking at it. I wound up selling because I just had to have something else. I don't even recall what I replaced it with. I have since acquired a new 229 and don't plan on letting this one go.

I've bought several older model CPO Sigs and never had a problem. They're a good buy if you can find them, depending upon price.

FYI this one's a 1990 P228.

Yes. The three red box 229s the dealer had were all 40s. One was a DAK (double action only). Didn't buy but since dealer is in state may visit. Thanks for all input. Didn't know the CPO pistols.

There are 2 versions of the 229 9mm. They use different mags. The old ones are the same as 228 and the new ones are the same size as the 40s&w mags. The reason was Sig just consolidated two guns into one. They used to make the 229 40sw with wider grip for wider mags. And the 229 9mm with thinner grip for the old 228 mags. They dropped the old mags and made the 229 with the 40sw magwell in both calibers

The guns themselves are good. I'm currently wanting to sell my old 228 but reason is specific to me, not the gun

Keep an eye out for Sig's monthly specials on their website. Last year they ran a special on .22 conversion kits for about 4 of their models for $199.

I bought my P229 for a song at a garage sale several years ago. Much to my surprise it had a laser guide rod installed in it. A new battery was all it took to get it operating again. This has been an excellent and reliable pistol for carry over the years and if i had to get rid of all but one of my carry guns this is the one I would keep.

I have a Sig P228 that is my carry pistol and it runs flawlessly. I'm a big fan of Sig firearms and own several. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a CPO if it was a model I wanted.
