Crabapples

Never knowing anything about or being around any crab apples, a friend and I crawled on our hand and knees across rocks, cactus and ticks just to sample some beautiful "cherries" from a tree.

I have two crab apples that just dropped their blossoms. One pink and one white. These bear no fruit. But, I think they do pollinate my one fruit bearing apple tree which is showing a lot of fruit. In E. Washington it’s interesting to see the pollinator crab apples in the large production orchards with their radically different shapes and usually different colored blossoms. It is quite the sight to see all the large orchards in bloom where you get mile after mile of bright colors.

I can’t wait for the sweet cherries to hit the stands.

apples this year again, lots of pears but the blossoms are gone and the raspberries have not bloomed yet.

We don’t have Raspberries, yet.....but, hope to plant some!
Our Apples, Crab Apples, and Pears are in full bloom. Our Choke Cherries are coming in, and very soon our Gooseberries and Currents will bloom. Our Nanking Cherries are about done! memtb

Growing up we lived in Cheektowaga, NY. Cheektowaga is derived from the Iroquois Indian's language " Chictawauga" word meaning land of crabapples. In the 1970's the town planted thousands of these trees as a heritage movement. In the neighborhoods that the trees still remain today they are gorgeous when in bloom. Unfortunately the fruit can be messy along with the bird droppings they create so a lot of the trees ended up getting the George Washington special.

Years ago my SIL ran the VNA in Cheektowaga.

Yes, had buddy that made crabapple wine and I turned out well, I guess I don’t do wine. Crabapples were a secondary in many jellies back in the day before sure- gel. I forget name of stuff but crabapples make natural gel. In this area they are all over, I don’t know if native or were planted for cooking purposes.

No apples this year!

I woke up the other morning to find ALL my blossoming apple trees, peach trees, and cherry trees covered with SNOW! I might have one or two trees that had not started to blossom? Definitely no cider this year!
