Trigger pull on my 27-2 started feeling poorly. Opened it up to find the hammer stud broken at it's base. Can't find my Jerry K manuel right now but I assume the stud is a pressed fit. This may be one of those 'don't do this at home' repairs and I don't have great confidence in the area gunsmith. I'm sure S&W would do a fine repair job but the overnight round trip extortion rates of UPS/FEDEX will probable mean this 27 will be spending many a day in the back corner of the safe.

A broken hammer stud is not a DIY project. S&W will do a fine job for you. I would not let my local 'smithy work on something like that either.

Call SW and ask if their famous lifetime warranty covers it, I would think it should. A frame stud should NEVER fail. They might spring for a shipping label. They are allowed to use US Mail if they choose which is way cheaper than the private carriers who demand overnight air be used on any handgun. Could save you about $80.

A 27-2 would be before their Lifetime Service Guarantee came about. I would not send it to anyone else. While it is hard to believe the stud broke, you still need it fixed.

The '84 8 3/8" 29 that was given to me by friends when I got out of high school sheared a hammer stud in the early '90's and it was covered by the factory. They wouldn't promise they would cover it before I sent it, but it came back beautifully repaired and reblued just like new for free.
I found it was broken because I was oiling it before putting it away after a particularly wet bear hunt. While working in the oil I pulled the trigger SA and the hammer stayed back... For a split second I thought I was in the Twilight Zone. I couldn't believe it.
The most eerie thing is that the time I pulled the trigger before that was from a few feet away on a rather angry 350 to 400 lb. black bear that my friend had wounded. Funny when mechanical things decide to quit working.

There's a fairly recent thread around here that shows a picture of a gun that was repaired by the factory, without the (expensive) reblue option. You may want to look for it to help you decide what to do.
With the amount of guns that break with today's quality standard they cannot afford that any longer.

I would wait 'till you have the coin to have the whole job done. A fine revolver like that warrants the work, and will subsequently be a source of pride and enjoyment for a good long time.
"beautifully repaired and reblued just like new for free" I just can't bring myself to expect a company to repair a product I bought used 25 years ago, shot ten thousand rounds thru and did dry fire practice with for free. When I get the revolver repaired, reblue or not, I will post a picture. Thanks again.
