Cream soda question - who made it?

We went visiting one of my sons and family tonight. On the way we stopped and bought a 6 pack of Jones Soda. 2 of the bottles were Cream Soda. They were clear.

In my ill spent youth, everyone knew it was red pop. I even remember when the same son was about 2 or 3 and I realized he'd never had red pop. We went out to the car and too a ride to the nearest store, buying a bottle. What's not to like?

But in my foggy memory, I recall some maker produced cream soda in Yellow. Maybe Canada Dry? Anyone remember. We're talking the 1950s I'm sure.

A&W makes the pale (yellow) stuff nowadays. It's not too bad, even in 'diet' form.

Are you thinking of Shasta?

More important than the coloring, is the sweetener. I don't know if the kind you have is sweetened with cane sugar or hfcs...but I drive across the state line into N.C. buy the A&W made with cane sugar in the glass bottles- much better and it will give a good burp! The caveat is, even though they sell cans and plastic bottle right along side it- only the glass bottled stuff is sweetened with cane sugar.

Of course, they are selling the "throwback" stuff in Dr. Pepper, Pepsi and Mtn. Dew in cans right now- great stuff. I only buy the Dr. Pepper- as it is independently owned and just licensed in certain areas- sometimes to Coca-cola, sometimes to Pepsi. I believe it is licensed to RC in part of N.C....I think.

I know this makes me sound like a "coke soaker" but I really am not, but if I want one, I want it to taste like it supposed to- not the worthless, tasteless junk they market to us in bulk plastic bottles that won't even make a respectable belch!

"Red Pop"? When I lived in NYC 1959-1961 Cream Soda was a golden brown color,looked sort of like beer-not "yellow". Then when I moved to Central NJ in 1961 and I encountered Cream Soda that was red-I thought that rather perverse. Although it tasted OK. That was a long gone local brand called E.L. Kerns. Some of the best Cream Soda I have had recently has been a store brand labeled "Main Street". In NJ it's sold by Stop'n'shop, across the river in Pa it's sold by the Giant food chain.

No more foggy than mine. Canada Dry did have a yellow-colored cream soda. They had a bottle with a tapered top, going to a gridded bottom half.

Canada Dry also had a great grapefruit soda, Wink. Much better than Fresca.

Jones is pretty good. I still like Big Red and Barq's.

I don't remember a yellow creme soda but my two favorites are Swiss Creme and Big Red.

One of the highlights of my childhood (mid-to-late '60's) was Sun Crest cream soda (it was yellow) bought at the Whistle Stop Pop Shop. Lord, how I miss that stuff.

NEHI Cream Soda and Nesbitt's Cream Soda, was what we sold at my Dad's grocery store when I was a kid.

You can check for "respectable belch" levels of carbonation without torturing your taste buds with a Catch-22 test.
1. Place a thoroughly agitated can (or --- shiver --- plastic bottle) of the questionable liquid on a stump.
2. Pace off 22 yards.
3. Shoot object with .22LR (has to be 40gr solid - test isn't valid using HP)
If you Catch some of the mist cloud on the bill of your NRA cap, the can had at least one "respectable belch" in it.

As for taste, I have no empirical data, but I've heard from very reliable sources that enough White Lighting will make almost anything taste good.

Beach Elvis beat me to it; I used to get Sun Crest Yellow Cream Soda in Marion, Ohio. Thru the years I have had Cream Soda in : Red, Yellow, Clear, Amber, Blue, and Brown. Red, Yellow and Clear were my favorites.

When I was a kid, Barq's cream soda was the big seller where we lived but don't see it any more. Big Red seems to be the most popular here now and my favorite.

I lived in Long Island and that's what I remember. Stuff had so much fizz I recall opening a bottle and hitting the kitchen ceiling. My Mom was real pleased.

Alive and thriving. Back in the 1940s, too.

On the cream soda issue, I'm sure it was Canada Dry in Yellow. Barq's was the red stuff. Taste was the same. Fizz pretty similar, too. If you weren't careful on the first or second drink it would overflow. If you tried to stop it by drinking more, out the nose it came.

I guess the problem stems from me not buying soft drinks. Also from the idea the only cold stuff comes in cans from machines or plastic bottles. You used to have a cooler with whatever the store decided to put in it.

Yes, I haven't had any Nehi Grape in a while. Like nearly a half century.

One of my perverted hobbies is exploring old buildings. The roadside signs every company used later were recycled into a patch for a hole in an outside wall or roof. Most of those have now vanished due to folks decorating basements with them. Even the rust is sought to prove age and provenance. Our heritage down the tubes.

Barq's ("Barq's has bite!") still makes a vanilla Cream Soda in addition to their red.
Dad's makes a yellow cream.
I think I remember the yellow you're talking about though - it was high visibility, highway safety, neon, glowing yellow. Toxic looking. Facted bottle. And ...
GEM!!! It just came to me. It was Gem Cream Soda.

I remember it from my southern Ohio youth. It was bottled in Wellston Ohio up into the 70's according to the WWW.

Yep, Sun Crest is the one I remember also, great stuff, but you and B-Elvis and myself are in the same region soooo-----.

Now on a related topic, I have found how to get a real Pepsi just like the old days. Go to a Mexican food store they got it still in the old bottles, new stuff bottled in Mex. shipped here.
