Creepy Experience Last Night

If you have a lighter, can it be a flamethrower?
EDIT, that stuff can go like 20' in a stream.
EDIT, hold my beer.

I personally haven't attempted that but it very possibly might work. Sure there is a youtube video somewhere. :D

And here it is: (Note I removed the link because it posted the video and I didn't know if it violated the forum rules.) The answer is "YES" it can be used as a flame thrower and appears to be quite an effective one. Yep, it's one of those hold my beer and watch this situations.

Not trying to scare you and am glad you are ok..But he sounds like a creep and NOW he has your tag number and probably YOUR address. Not too hard to find that info...Carry carry carry if at all possible

First, I'm glad you're OK.

A gun, pepper spray and other tools are some good suggestions here, but no one (unless I missed it) has suggested the best solution; don't go alone. I understand that you've been doing this for a while, but a woman alone in a dark place at night, especially with a predictable pattern, is what we call a victim.

Without a doubt, the easiest and best deterrent is numbers. Criminals love predictable and single people. They are much less likely to do anything when there is more than one.

Is it legal to carry an ASP? I would get one of those if legal.
No, the ASP is illegal in CA. In fact, it's illegal to carry any club or expanding baton. My recommendation is to carry a 5 cell Maglite. Clubs are illegal, but flashlights are not.

Rastoff:

Yes, someone, or more than one suggested that John, her husband go with her. And she plans to do that.

What bothers me is that you folks in California are pretty much forbidden to protect yourselves. While many states are lifting needless restrictions on self defense, Governor Brown just signed legislation making it ever more difficult and expensive to protect oneself. With all due respect, I just can't get my head around some of the California laws. California is a beautiful state, and has some wonderful folks living there. I have family and friends there, and have visited often. There is much to be admired in the state, but these radical restrictions on human rights are simply beyond my understanding. Certainly criminals are not going to follow them, so that means that law abiding citizens are going to be at more and more risk, and be empowered by these new (and a bunch of old) laws.

Best Regards, and stay safe out there, Les

That is way beyond 'suspicious'....

I think he was fishing for a opportunity to get you into a bad position, or at very least harass you into thinking you were in danger.

My bro lives in CA and had this experience:

He had just left and ATM with a wad of cash and was driving when a car with a pretty girl driver bumped him from behind. He was thinking about stopping when a car full of thugs pulled up and he took off. It was obviously a trap to set him up for being robbed or worse and even could have been one of these 'legal' traps where they put you in a position to get your insurance company cleaned out. He said that he was glad he had his 'buddy' on the seat by him because it looked like he would really have needed to use it.:eek::eek:

PS: An alternative to your situation is that the guy in the truck might have been looking for 'companionship' which gives me the shivers all the more.

If someone is mirroring your moves, matching your speeds as you change them, you're being stalked. That's the time to not worry about what's PC and go full defensive, as in get out of dodge if you can, call the police if you can, and use your wits to not allow that predator to gain any kind of an advantage on you.

Your situational awareness seems to be okay (you seem to be aware of what's going on around you), but frankly, you seem to have a naive thought process as to what you are seeing. Put simply, and bluntly, you have no business being out late at night, alone and unarmed with your current mindset. You are not really even ready to be out if you are armed at this point.
Predators thrive in the night, he clearly WAS a predator, and yet you at most, just thought of him as "kind of creepy". He was not "kind of creepy", he was stalking you and looking to do you harm, there is zero question of that.
I can only recommend that you get some serious tactics and awareness training, before, or alongside of you getting some handgun training and a concealed carry permit.
For now, you should not be out alone, doing what you are doing, at night.
The world is a crummy place, full of bad people, and I think your attitude is going to get you in trouble (putting it kindly) until you realize that.
Again, I apologize for the sharp nature of my reply, assessment and advice, but most of the other responses are sugarcoating it, and that's not what you truly need to hear.
Good luck.

OK, I didn't mean to pile on. I just think how we handle ourselves is far more important than what we carry.

Yes, the laws here are tough and most are stupid. They don't reduce crime.

However, in Sacramento county it's not that hard to get a license to carry.

Or......

....frighten or worry you because some people live for that.

OMCHamlin and WalkinJack summed it up best...... You're lucky this time....AND don't ever put yourself in a situation like that again. You could have become another statistic of a violent act by a serious predator. That is no way to go....

Some have suggested that you arm yourself to the teeth then persist in the same behavior. I think that would be a serious mistake. Without proper training and mindset, weapons can actually be a liability. I have heard some women say they could never shoot anyone, they would only use a gun to scare an attacker away. Huge mistake to think like that.

IIRC, you are now on record as having reported the guy. If you go there again and in one way or anther you injure or kill him, you may come off as some sort of self-appointed vigilante. You may even be charged with a crime. Double this if your husband is along.

Even if there are no criminal charges, he or his surviving relatives could sue you in civil court. No matter what his previous criminal record is, be prepared to hear his mother and grandmother crying about what an angel he was while displaying his eight grade graduation picture.

Way, way better to avoid any further encounters / confrontations.
