Yesterday there was a S&W 686 3 inch CS 1 for sale on a Canadian gun site called Gunnutz. The asking price was $500 and it was in real nice shape. The seller had the gun barrel ported which i was not crazy about. The gun was sold in a matter of hours to some lucky dude.

I agree with the above. The porting pretty well destroyed the value of the revolver.
I have also noticed that the 629 3 inchers, when ported, lose their value pretty quickly.

I agree that a 3" CS-1 would be worth $750-$800 maybe more..
The Porting would have the guns price down to around $500..

The CS-1s were rare for their time as they had Round butt frames & the matte finish as well as an undercutt sights made for the US Customs Service.. They had Pachmayr Grips factory but have seen some with combats..

In Canada, any handgun with a barrel length less than 105mm (about 4.13") is categorized as a prohibited firearm and cannot be purchased by anyone who is not licensed to own them. The only way to be licensed is that the owner has to have owned at least one prohibited firearm in a the same class (there are a number of other different classes of prohibited firearms such as converted automatics or prohibited military-style rifles) continuously since 1993.

That means that the youngest potential purchaser of these classes is around 37, and since there are no new members being added to the club, the total pool of potential purchasers decreases each year with more of us going to the great range in the sky. The small upside for those of us lucky to be licensed is that there are some low prices (I've seen CS1s less than $500 in mint shape; and I paid less than $175 for a flat latch Model 36 in VG condition, and only $300 for my Model 28-2 mentioned here.). The downside is that there are many, many new shooters who can never enjoy owning a short-barrelled handgun, and resale prices are abysmal except for very rare cases.

There has to be a lot of CS 1 out there beyond the ones ordered by the Customs Dept. How many did S&W make on what they call over run. It seems that they just keep showing up.

From my research and other posts here on the forum I do believe they came with rubbers. Combats really dress em up, but the Pacs are way better shooting grips IMO. I would have paid 700.00 EASILY and QUICKLY for the revolver, ported or not as they are sweet and rare revolvers that are an excellent defensive weapon. With double hearing protection you would have no problem with the porting and associated noise.

I've shot many a round of both ported and unported revolvers at night and there is zilch for difference in flash when shooting a hot load. They do reduce muzzle rise, which allows faster follow up shots. Shame it takes away from the price as its worth the money to have a higher pressure load have its barrel ported. There only drawbacks are their louder report and a dirtier muzzle end. I'm sure you would never know the difference if used for a actual shoot from talking to a few LEO's who did fire their weapons. I'll take the dirt for a faster second shot if needed. JMHO

For 500.00 that gun would have been a steal and in my safe if I'd of seen it!

If I stumbled across it at a local shop for $500 I'd still pull the trigger. Pre-lock K and up Smith snubbies are rare as hens teeth in California.

Both Mine Came with Pachs

My trusty Commander was killing my jacked up back and the 60 with 158 gr Speer Gold Dots are managable with the Uncle Mike full coverage grips.
I've done night shooting with it and a 3" 36-6, .38 and they are both flame throwers ported or not.

Both of my CS-1s came in the box with Pachs. They have a small slot cut into them so the serial number could be visually verified without removing the grips.

I swapped out the grips for Ahrends and stored the old grips in the boxes.

Nice pair of twins SmithToter! I got a fantastic deal on a set of combats for mine. They look great but suck when shooting magnums as they bloody the web of my hand after a couple of cylinders. Much prefer Ahrends FG's that I sand down to custom fit my hands. Actually like the factory rubbers the best as they point naturally and absorb recoil well. For a combat revolver I wish it had a dot on the front sight as it's hard to pick up in low light. I do not use it for a SD weapon due to the price. If I did I would have a glowing dot front sight installed. Other than that it's slick. If you take the sideplate off (carefully and with the correct tip screwdriver) degunk it and add Militec-1 grease to the contact surfaces you will not believe the difference in the already smooth trigger!

Going back to the original OP, I would easily paid the 700.00 for it, ported or not. They are rare and selling for more than that on the different sites WHEN they do come up for sale. The ported one mentioned would see some serious holster time.

If my memory serves, I think there were 5800 CS-1's produced back in the late 80's. I understand they were replaced with autos, and a good number of them demilled by the government. I believe they were issued with Pachmayrs. I have one and think it may be the (almost) perfect revolver. Bill

I have a line on a cs-1 for around $600, don't think it's been shot and I don't know about the case or papers. Would that one be a good deal? I know nothing about L frames or their value.

Yes, that would be an excellent deal for either a 3" or 4".

A-10, please post some photos of your new CS-1, I know sportsterguy will be very happy to see them :) .
