I recently purchased two new S&W mags for my CS45 and I think there is a problem. In the picture, A is the original mag, B and C are the new ones. I noticed it was difficult to load the new ones, to a point I actually pushed one of the bullets deeper into the case. I compared these mags to my other .45's, 4566, 4513, and 4516. None of them have the almost vertical crimp just below the shell casing. B and C have this crimp even higher that A and it looks as if the crimp tool had a burr or a broken tool when the crimp was hammered in. Any one have an idea why the CS45 has the extra crimp on the mags?

Do they function ok? If so, I wouldn't worry about it.

They have the extra crimp on purpose from the factory due to the feeding of the CS45.It helps prevent the next round from being displaced when the top round is fed.

The right side crimps look like the S&W picture. Only the left side one on B&C are different.

You failed to answer the crucial question...........

Have you tried shooting your pistol with these magazines or are you trying to analyze a problem that may be completely imaginary?

Yes I have, thats what brought it to my attention. First problem was loading the mag, shells 1,2,and 3 go in normally due to being able to compress the spring far enough to miss the crimped area. Shells 5 and 6 very hard to load, this is where I actually pushed a bullet deeper into the case.

When shooting I had two occasions where the next shell would not come to the top of the mag, being held up by the crimp, the slide went into battery with no shell in the chamber. Since then I have done some polishing to the inside of the mag where the crimps were and improved it some. Just concerned on how much more to polish out and what the original purpose of the crimps were considering none of my other .45's had the crimps.

The crimps are to keep the rounds from moving too far forward under recoil. My CS40 mags have the same style crimps.

When you load these magazines, make sure you push the rounds all the way to the rear of the magazine so that the crimp is ahead of rim. This will allow the magazine crimps to ride in the groove between the body of the case and the rim. This should prevent the problem that you describe.

If you load the mags this way and you still have a problem, then I think you're on the right track with the polishing. I'd keep polishing/filing till the operational problem goes away. I'd do this at the range, taking it slowly. Like they say.....you can take metal off, it's a lot harder putting it back on. ;)

One other thing.

I by no means suggesting this is the correct way to resolve ,but me being the Bubba I am. I had the same issue with one that I had bought (have 4) anyway I gently opened the lips a LITTLE and seem to take care of issue. I haven't been to the range enough to prove 100% but so far so good.
