Current Model 67

Being a K-frame kinda guy, I’ve thought that a model 67 with a heavy profile barrel like the model 64 would make a really nice IDPA SSR gun. In looking at the new model 67 on S&W’s website and in their 2009 catalogue, it appears to have a heavy barrel – at least I see no sign of a taper. Has anyone actually handled one lately? Do they still have a tapered barrel or are they now a non-tapered heavy profile?

Hi, The difference in the new model 10 and 67 is they have the dreaded IL. I have handled a new one, They are identical to the older 67's the only difference is the barrel is a bull barrel. The forcing cone is still the same. So tat being said.......With the forcing cone being the same in both revolvers I just assume buy an onder one and save our history...plus it does not have that IL......
They will probably cost the same as the one I saw NIB was $575.00

Excellent – thanks panamajack310. It is the balance that a bull barrel configuration gives that intrigues me. I have a 64 – 5 and a 67 – 1 and often thought if I could combine the handling of the 64 with the better sight picture of the 67 I’d have close to the ideal SSR gun. However, I couldn’t just stick a 64 barrel on a 67 as that would not be legal for IDPA (the gun must be in a configuration that was factory offered). Additionally, I didn’t want to bastardize a perfectly good pre-lock 67. It seems as thought my friends up in Springfield have helped me out. As my friend 18DAI will tell you – I am a heathen and will buy and shoot S&Ws with plastic, MIM and the IL, although I do restrict the IL guns to gaming only.

You know the model 67-1 was made with a bull barrel. Check the forum gun ads, I saw a 67 with bull barrel on there...

Thanks! I didn't know the dash 1 was offered with a bull barrel. I don't see one on the forum for sale board, but I'll keep looking.

Why put wear and tear on real S&W's.

Edited to add: J&G sales has a current production model 67 for sale. It has a two piece barrel, and they want ALOT of money for it. That price must be a misprint.

Hi 18DAI! Two piece barrel! That's where I draw the line - it shows up on the J&G site when you enlarge the pics. I may try and find one of the late model 10s - say a dash 7 or 8 that had a heavy barrel. That would do the trick. As for your old 66-3, it has become my main IDPA SSR gun and it would be bad juju to part with it. Are you shooting the Cup? I'm shooting on Thursday.

Stillwater, You and I think alike. I really like the Model 67 with the heavy barrel. I purchased a 67-5 several years ago with the lock and one piece barrel. Great gun, I sent it to the factory and had the revolver action job preformed and a gold bead front sight installed. After I shot this gun for a couple of years..... I of course wanted another one. So I set out in search of a 67-4 the -4 is the last one made before the lock. That search took me two years. I just found one on the net at Kiddery in Maine. I plan to have the action done and the gold bead sight installed. I think the 67-4 is the best of the best 38 cal revolver. Adjustable sight, stainless steel, heavy barrel and no lock. With out the lock the lines of the gun are just more pleasing to the eye. Good luck with your search.

I handled a current Model 67 last week at a local dealer. The main thing I noticed was that the muzzle had a recessed crown about a quarter of an inch deep. That's the first time I have seen one on a Smith revolver.I guess it would protect the muzzle rifling from knocks quite well, but it looked a bit odd. It had a heavy bull barrel and of couse, the current lock on the side.
