Let me just say that I have entertained the idea of having a custom revolver put together for myself for some time. I have contacted a couple of the major custom gun shops and priced items out and for one reason or another didn't have it done.

I would like to thank fellow Forum member Mr.RevolverGuy for posting the video and thread about his customized Model 65 and the work done by Lewis Throne of THRONE ARMS.

After seeing what he had done to the Model 65 and knowing that was the work I wanted done to my Model 64 I contacted Mr. Throne to see what we could work out. Mr. Throne is located in Trinidad, Colorado, so I knew I would have to ship my revolver to him and feared the long wait time that others had quoted, and I had grown to expect, when getting custom work done.

After contacting Mr. Throne he stated that he would be able to perform the work that I wanted done and that he could have it done in about 2 to 3 weeks. He also provided me with a quote for the work that I wanted to have performed and the cost was so reasonable I decided to have two Model 64's done, one RB and one SB, to have a matching set. The cost of having the work done on both of these was less (with shipping) than the cost of having one done at the locations where I had priced items out!

I had purchased two Model 64's from the Virginia Dept of Corrections trade in for this project and had thought of getting them converted to round butt. While messing around waiting to get this done I had stumbled across a RB, DAO Model 64 that is believed to be a trade in from an overseas contract. With that said I decided to keep the nicest looking SB 64 and opted to use the RB DAO so that I can have one of each. Now I do have a Brinks trade in Model 64, 4 inch, as well so I have the converted ones and two that are still in original format for the purist out there.

Here is what I wanted done to each:

1: Reduce the 4 inch barrel down to 3 inches and re-crown the barrel.
2: Install a sight on the front and after discussion with Mr. Throne I opted for a fiber optic sight to be milled in. I purchased the sights that I wanted (one green and one red because I wanted to test each out) and shipped them to Mr. Throne with the revolvers.
3: Slab side the barrel once it was reduced. I just have a thing for the slab-sided barrel. Not sure what it is but I do.
4: Smooth out the action on each and we ended up replacing the springs with Wolff Springs.
5: Bob the hammer on the SQ as it had the full hammer when purchased.
6: Bead blast them to take out any blemishes and provide a nice subdued finish to the SS. Both of the donor models were pretty dinged up from years of use and lack of TLC.
7: And the caliber was placed below the barrel to keep things within regulations.

The turn around time for the work was right around 3 weeks. It would have been less but Mr. Throne discovered an issue with one of the springs on the SB so he called to consult with me about this. He then ordered the parts to have them replaced and did so. While he was doing one I just had him replace them both to keep the actions similar.

There was great communication throughout the process to include a photograph when the project was almost completed. Once I received the photo all I could say was WOW. The great thing is the photo didn't do it justice. Once I held each in my hand and saw how nice the work was that was done to each I am beyond pleased and my WOW was an understatement.

While I am not a great photo guy I did take a couple shots for posting and a target shot from today when I went out to test fire. Both are very accurate with a great, smooth trigger pull. In the target, shot from 10 yards, you can see that with one round I didn't do my job but hey I can't fault anyone but me for that.

For the intended purpose, self defense, both of these revolvers are more than accurate.

I am more than pleased with the work that was done and now have something that is uniquely mine to cherish and pass down. An added bonus was the great pricing and the fact that Mr. Throne is a great guy and works hard to make sure you get what you want done correctly.

As a side note to his quality of work I had placed two older Magna grips on both revolvers to ship them. I figured if they were dinged up then I wouldn't be upset and they would ship smaller in the package. I got back two cleaned up and looking like new Magna Grips that will make their way onto other handguns in my collection because they look great.

In closing I would say that if you are looking to get some work done on a firearm LEWIS THRONE at Throne Arms is worth checking into.

I know that if I can find a low priced Model 681 or 581 donor gun I will be calling him again!

Simply fabulous! The images and the story:)
Nice to hear of a gunsmith with the personal touch and communication skills. Sounds like a guy that I too would like to business with.
I like what you and he did to both, those are knockouts! Congrats on putting together a pair and getting them just how you wanted and then some!!
Enjoy and start planning your next project:)

Very impressive work. I'm a fan of the slabside barrels myself. You've got the little hamster in my head running! Hmmmmm.
Ha, I was just thinking the same thing. I'm now seriously thinking of switching gears and looking for something that I can have customized. Especially after looking at those two beauties.
Count me as another slabside fan too.

Those are very nicely done. I like em !

Those look wonderful! I have a feeling this guy's wait times are going to increase quickly.

Very nice! Can you tell us about the rear sight. It appears to be painted white. Maybe it is just the flash from the camera?

It does appear that way but it is just the flash from the camera.

That would be a nice touch though.

And thanks for all the nice comments. I am very pleased with how they turned out.

Not a fan of slab-sided barrels myself, but I have to say that is a beautiful pair of pistols. Very nice work.

Nice custom guns, he does nice work. What does he charge to do what you had done. Had Andy Horvath cut the 25-2 Barrel to 31/2" and add a Weigand front sight base. He changed 225.00 for that. Love custom guns, I have a 581 that would look good with a 3" bbl. Larry

Blacking of the rear of the bobbed hammer is a small but important detail. One that can't be fully appreciated unless shooting a shiny hammer spine with a light behind you. The front sight disappears in a glare.

Nice work and a beautiful pair of revolvers. Hope you have two kids that like guns.
