I'm considering getting an N Frame revolver in .357 and while looking at the new models on S&W website I noticed that the Model 20, 27(s) and "Heavy Duty" all have a 4th screw. What gives? Is this just for a vintage look?

I have 4)J's, 4)K's and 3)L's, but no N's yet.

Yes. You can even remove and reinstall the side plate w/o removing that screw.

Before surrendering $1000-$1200 on a new Model 27, compare the quality of fit, finish, and action of a new one to that of an older one.
Wise advice!!
I picked up this model 27 in a pawn shop last year. Asking price was about 9 bills, and since I'm a regular customer, the final deal was a trade of a 6 inch stainless Ruger GP-100 plus 50 dollars for the Smith and Wesson. It had gawdawful ugly polymer grip, and no rear sight, but I was able to source a set of Target factory grips and a correct rear sight, and now it is back to factory glory again.
