I recently purchased what was advertised as a SW 442 Stainless .38 Special cylinder assy.

It arrived and its shorter than my 442 blue. (I have a M60, 442, 637, and 342PD that are all in .38 special and all measure 1.593" OAL).

The one I received is 1.534" OAL with a shorter axle shaft on the crane. Its for a J-Frame, but which one??

Any idea what I actually got here?

In th the late 90s S&W introduced a new J-frame called J-Magnum frame. This is the standard frame for all J-frames at this time. A J-Magnum frame is a fraction of an inch longer than the old style frame. I suspect you have a cylinder for the old style frame.

Appreciate the information for sure. I need a new style cylinder assy (J-Magnum type) cylinder for my project. Did not know there were different cylinder lengths for the M60
