All,

Went hunting this morning with my Marlin 1894S and M58 both in .41 mag. Didn't get anything but later in the afternoon went to sight in an some old loads and now my cylinder will not open (fired all six in cylinder). Gun hasn't been shot much lately as I just got back frrom 2 yrs + in Astan. Had only fired 12 rds this afternoon.

Cylinder spins freely when the gun is unlocked, gun can be cocked/cycled DA or SA. Cylinder release ie Thumbpiece will not go all the way forward. The locking bolt sticks out passed the extractor rod stud under the barrel. Extractor rod is not bent and spins freely. I think the extractor rod is stuck forward. Any suggestions on how to get this unstuck? Was able to open the sideplate but stop there. Thanks in advance.

Most likely problem is an extractor rod that has come loose and unscrewed slightly. The thread is left hand. So looking at the muzzle end of the gun, turn the knurled end of the rod counter clockwise with your fingertips until it stops turning and it should open. Once you get it open grasp the end tightly between thumb and forefinger and cinch it down tight. I would not use any tools on it. Just double check it each time you clean the gun.

If it still won't open, there could be debris keeping the thumbpiece from going forward enough to release the Cylinder (locking) pin. And it could be under the front of the thumbpiece or internally. Remove the thumbpiece screw to check.

Ejector Rod

Sounds like the e-rod has backed out, you may want to see if you can wedge a credit card or simular piece of plastic between the end of the ejector rod and the release pin,may have to help the cylinder with a pop of the butt of your hand. Then tighten the rod, lefty tighty, righty loosey. Hope this helps. Tim

Exactly correct. Ejector rod has loosened up a bit, preventing it from releasing from the forward locking point under the barrel. Holding the weapon firmly while depressing the cylinder release button, then tapping the cylinder against a firm (but non-marring) surface should allow the cylinder to be freed up. Then simply tighten the ejector rod snugly and the problem will be gone. After a while you will get used to snugging up the ejector rod as a regular part of your cleaning and maintenance chores.

Best regards.

It does sound like the ejector rod is loose. Sometimes if you thumb the hammer back far enough to drop the lock and slip a business card between the lock and the cylinder it will allow you to turn the cylinder backwards. Hold the ejector rod with your fingers while you turn the cylinder backwards. Sometimes that will let you open the cylinder. Then tighten the rod

I would not try to pop it open BEFORE screwing the ejector rod tight 1st. There's no reason not to tighten the rod instead of forcing it open. Why risk bending it?
