Cylinder release latch

About when did the tapered cylinder release latch appear (replacing the earlier curved half moon style of its rear edge)?

Was it model specific or did models of existing revolvers convert to the tapered style?

Yes, that's my understanding also. I have a 617-1 and a 686-4 that both have the newer tapered cylinder latch button.

I have seen 686-4's with both style latches so I believe that is the time frame they were phasing them in.
