IMHO, Junior is like a lot of fairly talented young men (in all professions) who try to follow in the footsteps of incredibly talented fathers. He's NOT the man his father was, and he's NOT in the same league either as a driver. He's never going to measure up on the track any more than Kyle Petty can measure up to his dad's talent.
I FIRST MET JUNIOR IN 1993 . . .
An associate and myself had flown to Talledega, with the owner of a racing team that the business I worked for was considering sponsoring in NASCAR. Unfortunately, that team's driver got "fogged in" that morning in Tennessee and couldn't come down to run the car for us. The only other car being tested that day was Dale Earnhart's car that had won at Daytona the year before . . . now converted with a 6-banger into a Busch car for Junior . . . and Junior was there getting frustrated trying to get it to run. There were only two cars and crews in the garage that day, plus us and a famous, veteran driver . . .
ENTER NEIL BONNET . . .
Neil was also in the garage area, to see Junior that July day, and await the arrival of Davey Allison flying his new helicopter with their mutual friend, Red Farmer. NASCAR fans remember Davey's fatal crash that afternoon into the chain link fence next to the garage. Neil was the first to get to the chopper that day, and he shut it off . . . but that's another story.
BACK TO NEIL AND JUNIOR . . .
Neil was also at the track that day to announce, at a press conference at noon, that he was returning to NASCAR racing the next year. Since he had some time to kill, Neil volunteered to sub behind the wheel of the race car we were there to evaluate. And run it fast he did!!!
However, Junior's car sucked on the stopwatch, and his crew was soooo frustrated in not knowing how to get it to run. Finally Neil excused himself and went over to Junior. "Let me run that sucker around the track and see what I can figure out.
When Neil shut it down after a couple of laps and coasted back to the garage he got out and immediately declared, "I'll tell you what's wrong with this ****** *****, you've got the deflector plate on backwards on the carburetor!"
The crew popped the hood and Junior and his crew got real red-faced. Indeed, they'd put the deflector place on BACKWARDS so the carb wasn't getting the airflow it needed!
All the money in the world is not gonna make Junior a winner like his dad.
Danica, on the other hand, has some very serious talent and drive but she's been as held back by the good ol' boy network as Junior has been blessed. Give her a GREAT ride and she's gonna bring a lot of new fans to NASCAR. Plus . . . she's better lookin' than Junior!
T.
PS: We flew out of the airport next to the track only about ten minutes before Davey landed too close to the fence next to the garage, thus missing a very tragic event. We heard about it flying back on the race car owner's plane . . . a plane ironically once owned (and hot-rodded) by Davey. Neil sprinted from the garage and actually flipped the switch to turn off the chopper. Sadly, he knew right away his friend was gone, by seeing the brain matter . . . A sad day indeed for NASCAR FANS.
PPS: Our company went a different direction and never sponsored a race car team . . . but one of the young bucks we were interested in sponsoring DID enter NASCAR Winston Cup and has done quite well . . . by the name of Matt!
