I was in my safe the other day looking for a gun to shoot. I haven't shot my 17-4 with an 8 3/8" barrel in a while. When I pulled it out I saw some damage to the grip I didn't remember but I'm sure I did not purchase it in that condition.
I took a picture of the grip with some missing wood. I would like some suggestions of what to do because no one is interested in guns in my family and would rather not sell it in this condition. If I bought another set of grips for it, the numbers would not match.

I have used Brownells ACRAGLAS 2-Gun Glass Bedding Epoxy Compound Kit for Rifle Stock.

I would not be glueing in the wood chip. The Acraglas fills the whole area. Use tape to hold in .

Comes with some brown dye. Use sparingly.

Problem is the high cost of the kit, for your small repair.

Target stocks were not numbered.
Just determine if they are the football cut style or later speed loader cut style and pickup a set off ebay, probably cost around $100.
Otherwise discount the cost and let the next owner pick out a pair they like.

Looking at the grip at the lower backstrap, it looks like these have been poorly repaired once anyway. As Engine49guy correctly pointed out, some good used and correct replacements are in order. They are plentiful on Ebay. It looks like the gun was dropped to me. This is repairable but not worth the hours it would take to do a decent job.

Besides the chip, the left panel is mismatched to the right. Definitely time for new stocks.

Check on Ebay for another set. Good deals once and a while. Regardless they won't number to your gun. Factory K Frame Target Stocks (sold or ordered by dealer) are marked KT 357. I have a N Frame set marked NT 357. NO serial #. Bob

Many SW enthusiasts have a drawer of spare stocks,
Might be wiser to discount the asking price $50 rather than dealing with replacing them.
Nice ones will cost more , mediocre ones wont add value.

I vote with Engine49guy: sell it as is or just remove the grips and say they were damaged.

Thank you to everyone. I learned a lot. I forgot that I do have some spare grips, a bunch of tools and a box or two. I think I even have a wood presentation box that came with my Model 27.

For esthetic purposes, I would consider a nice pair of period targets. Look for steel (non-blued) washers on the inside. There are plenty of non-diamond targets out there with beautiful wood, they are usually unmarked, very attractive on a model 17, plus perfectly in your presentation case.

Those look entirely fixable to me, but the pic is out of focus. The poor fit of the right panel is probably just the grip pin hole and the divot needs a piece of goncalo fitted, glued and a little lacquer repair. Not a project for everyone but they should be salvaged.
