I was in the middle of changing a pair of grips on one of my blued S&W wheelguns yesterday. Well, something came up and I had to leave the house before I was able to finish putting the new grips on. I decided to tuck the grip-less revolver in one of my dresser drawers, on top of some T-shirts. As I was closing the drawer, a drop or two of sweat rolled off my forehead (it was hot yesterday, and I was hurrying to leave). I thought to myself...."surely that drop of sweat didn't land on my nice K-frame"....as I closed the drawer and left the house.

Well, of course, it did. Pulled the gun out today and there was two faint rust spots starting, fortunately in an area that is covered by the Uncle Mike's boot grips that I installed.

I tried rubbing it out with some Outers Gun Oil and a paper towel. Most people would never notice what is left...but I know.

Right now, I'm telling myself, "Don't worry, it's a shooter"...as I'm kicking myself in the butt.

I like blued and stainless guns...but stainless sure has its advantages.

A drop of #9 and some extra fine steel wool, then some oil.

Or, some Flitz and a soft cloth.

Gather up some Hoppes #9, a piece of 0000 steel wool and a old copper penny. You will also need phonebook..

Take the penny and lightly rub it over the freckles. This will remove any high spots. Then, use the steel wool and Hoppes.

When you are satisfied with the finish,...

Take the phonebook and smack yourself really hard with it,...on your noggin. This will give positive reinforcement to never do this again.

Rural folk can substitute a stick of firewood if necessary.

Don't use steel wool - there is stainless steel stuff that works better - the steel wool gets in the metal and rusts more.

Take it from someone who can break a sweat thinkin about manual labor... I feel your pain. Any time I'm pretty much doing anything, especially shooting in this blasted Oklahoma heat, I'm leakin like a sieve all over my stuff... that's one of the reasons I'm pretty much all stainless shooting toys. That's my story and I'm stickin to it!

If you must use any type of "wool", consider bronze. It's softer than the steel, doesn't rust, and when properly used will not remove blueing.
