"Darkest Hour"...some of the best acting I've ever seen!

Thanks, friends, for suggesting captions or subtitles. i had to look these up to know what they are, since I've never had occasion to use them. Are these features available on a computer? I don't have a functioning television, so I would have to find a film version that works on my desktop.

Thanks again,
Andy

I believe it is an option on You Tube. Look for the small "cc". Darkest Hour was available there a year or so back.

I watched Darkest Hour the other night...one of the finest films I've seen in years. It chronicles Winston Churchill's appointment as Prime Minister of Britain in 1940, when the Third Reich was marching unchecked through Europe, and Hitler had Britain in his sights.

Everything about this picture was well-done, and there were, so far as I can tell, very few liberties taken with the real story. Gary Oldman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his astonishing portrayal of Winston Churchill, and when you watch him, you'll know why... :)

Thanks for the recommendation. I watched it on NETFLIX last night and found it as well done and enjoyable as you described.

Outstanding cinematography, beautifully shot period piece.
Winston… just got to love that old *******. Right man, at the right time, in the right place.
Gary Oldman’s acting in this piece, certainly deserving of the Oscar.
Another great role of his was in the Professional. The man can act.

Normally I have nearly zero interest in movies, but I wouldn't mind seeing that one, since I really enjoy history.

Problem is, historically I have had an awful time understanding British accents. Had to give up on Downton Abbey after about 20 minutes or so of catching maybe 25% of the dialogue. Any ideas from the Brits among us?

Regards,
Andy

"Britain and America are two nations divided by a common language". The attribution of this quote is still in dispute but seems fair. My Mother's parents were from Scotland and my Father's from England so I can usually understand the soundtrack but do understand it can be quite difficult.

I live with a Brit and half the time I can't understand her either!!

I am not a military person, or strong in History, but it seems to me that should Hitler have taken England, that the US would not have had anyplace to stage resources to attack German held territory. No air bases, no staging areas for tanks, equipment and soldiers.

Whenever watching Netflix or Amazon Prime, I leave the subtitles on. My issue is hearing, not accents.

But I also enjoy watching foreign films in their original languages rather than dubbed, so find subtitles useful regardless of language.

Saw the movie last night. It was great. I see why it won 4 academy awards. I didn't realize the UK came that close to surrender during Dunkirk.

Neville Chamberlin lost his only son in WW 1 as did many others. It was estimated Great Britain lost 30 % of it's males between the ages of 17 and 25 in that war.

Churchill led the fight to save the World from tyranny.
His reward from the people was to be promptly voted out of office.

This ^ was exactly why victory in the Battle of Britain, and the absolute determination of the British people to continue fighting the war, ended up being so vitally important.

It is almost too ghastly to imagine what would have happened in Europe had the UK negotiated an end to hostilities before the USA entered the war. Think about France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Luxembourg...all becoming part of the Third Reich, with Hitler having uncontested control over them. Think about the reign of terror that would have ensued...the continuation of the Holocaust...the total repression of civil rights...:(

This is why so many people credit Winston Churchill with saving the world...

You are correct . . . England was to the European theater to the US the same as Hawaii was to the Pacific theater.
