Dash Cams

I think they are a good idea as my neighbor was run off the road by a truck pulling a horse trailer but he has no way to "prove" that it actually happened. I'm considering getting one but would appreciate more information on them as to good or bad brands, features which are needed and not needed, easy of use, etc.

I use a Viofo A119. Pictures and video are quite clear, even at night, although plates can be difficult to read if they're more than about 50-60 feet away or moving too fast. It's a capacitor type and has GPS built in. I have it set to save the video in 5 minute clips, and with the 64GB SD card, it will save about 7 hours of video. I can also press a button to save either a picture or the current video clip it's recording so it won't record back over those. Thankfully I haven't needed it for anything legal but have used it a lot for saving some scenic drives we've been on. It also comes in handy, and is safer than the cell, for taking pictures of signs and things while driving.

I have a small action cam called an SJ400. I take it camping, hiking, biking and anytime I'd like to have a small light camera that takes 720p 60fps video.
I got a windshield mount, a cord and cigarette light adapter for it. In car mode, it turns on and off with the car. With a 32gb memory card, I can get 3 hours of video. Longer if I reduce resolution.

I can’t help you on various makes and models, just an observation on whether they’re a good idea:

Remember that they record stuff that may not be helpful to you, but you can’t pick and choose what you’ll disclose when push comes to shove. The dashcam isn’t invisible: it’s presence is apparent to a cop or a witness/victim of your driving. Whatever it records is going to be discovered and can’t be concealed.

Quite frequently, recording devices are less helpful to your position than the other guy’s.

I have the Blackvue 650 dual unit (front and rear) and their unit that prevents it from draining the battery when the truck is parked. When the truck is parked, it's motion activated so if someone backs into the truck, it gets recorded.
