I have been looking for a pre-lock Centennial for a carry gun and finally found a fair deal on a nice, used 640-1, s/n CCD77XX. Can anyone tell me when it was born or how to find that info?

Stan, you made a good choice on a 640-1 for a conceal carry gun. I have carried a 640-1 for years in a Galco pocket holster. I picked up another 640-1 really cheap and sold it at a local gun show for $450 to a dealer. Here's a picture of the gun I sold.

Thanks for the info. Purchase, shipping and FFL transfer came to $489 on mine. It's obviously been carried some, but looks like it will be a great shooter. Not an amazing deal, I know, but still almost $100 cheaper than a new one with the internal lock.

My 640-1 is one of my favorites for CCW. I believe you will like yours. I don't find that shooting magnums in it is too uncomfortable. I think the internal hammer gun makes an ideal CCW revolver...

armybass, I'm in Chesapeake. Here's a pic from the auction where I bought it, as I havent had a chance to get my camera out.

I had it tuned up some, trigger smoothed, and then put some Herretts on it. I find shooting 357s in it quite comfortable.

Love those Herretts Stocks Onomea NICE!!
Were they a Custom Offering??
Don't remember ever seeing another set quite like that before that come all the way up on the Centennial...
Bet they feel great!!
Congrats on the 640-1 Stan9106
Enjoy It!!

The Herretts are Jordan Troopers. They are made small for CCW, custom made fit to my hand, which is how Herretts works. I think the high coverage at the back of the grip frame makes for better recoil protection. Very nice people there, and outstanding customer service, in my experience.

Awsome 640,
I carried one for years in NY wish I still had it (Pre-Lock, Early issue) today My carries in NC would be a 640 to go with my model 19 glock
Congrats
Carl

Stan9106, Nice! That 640 is a good carry piece. I would like to find a nice one some day.

First post here, hello!

Lurking for a few days, waiting for my account approval.
Kinda getting "started" in the revolvers.

Mark, Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you will enjoy it and learn much. The level of knowledge about revolvers in general and S&W pistols in particular is amazing!
