Welcome to the Forum from Virginia
Welcome to the Forum from Virginia. This is THE best site for all things Smith & Wesson.
Your Model 39-2 probably shipped in the first half of 1978. My Model 39-2 is serial number A 434289 and it shipped in May 1978.
Our "source bible" here on the Forum is the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas. The latest is the 4th Edition and the 5th Edition is in the works by the authors.
According to SCSW 4th, the 1977 to 1978 serial numbers for the Model 39-2 were A 385001 to A 475000, and for 1978 to 1979 they are listed as A 475001 to A 565000.
There is no way to determine the actual date of manufacture meaning the date the serial number was actually stamped into the frame, before assembly and finishing. This is why we use the ship date from the factory records to determine the "date of birth" on any S&W firearm.
To find out the actual month and year of shipment this is a benefit of joining the SWCA and becoming a Member. If you become a Member then you can ask the S&W Historian about any S&W and then you get the month and year direct from actual preserved factory records.
If you desire a Factory Letter of Authenticity, and you are a Member then for a fee you will receive a official Letter defining exactly how the firearm was configured on the day it shipped and to whom, and where it shipped.
Again...........welcome to the Forum. I hope you enjoy your Model 39-2 as much as I do mine. They are very nice pistols.
By the way.........we LOVE pictures on this Forum. Just some cell phone shots are fine. Use the "manage attachments" button and attach up to 5 before posting and then we get to drool over your fine gun too.
