Dating my K22

Welcome to the Forum! Congratulations on inheriting a fine handgun. Yours is a late K-22 Masterpiece revolver from 1956, which S&W named (and stamped) the Model 17 the following year. We always appreciate pictures so perhaps you can post some. Enjoy!

Welcome to the forum,
Wondering if your revolver has an upper sideplate screw aka "fifth screw" above the S&W trademark stamp on the right sideplate just below the rear sight?

Picking a nit, S&W didn't name the K-22 Masterpiece the Model 17---they added the model number to the name. We, the collective masses, are the ones who substituted the use of model numbers for the names.

Given my distaste for the use of model numbers alone, I'm not sure when (or even if) products S&W identified by model numbers alone came along-------and don't really care---aside from the fact I have to look the numbers up in order to know what they're talking about---if/when I do care.

The fact of the matter is I'm pretty sure the products have always had model numbers (and/or letters) which were used internally.

I wish I had $5 for every time a newb comes here and says “I inherited this gun, what’s it worth, when was it made”.

Ok, I’m better now.
