Just got kicked in the head...

I was looking at the news and the last thing I expected to hear. He was super controversial in the 70's but proved that he was the real thing over the course his career. Another good one gone at the too young age of 69.

In all sincerity he was my favorite solo musician. I saw him countless times in concert, mostly at the Warfield in San Fran, a small venue where he liked to play. So incredibly sad......he was so talented. I was hoping he was going to come here again on tour with the release of his new album just days ago. I am so shocked and at a loss for words. Space Oddity was my favorite song of his.

I was never really a big Bowie fan. Then, about 1991, some friends and I were at an amusement park in Saratoga Springs when we noticed people setting up blankets on the ground around a small wood amphitheatre. They said there was going to be a free concert, so we sat down and waited. I was shocked to find it was David Bowie who came out to play. I was even more shocked that I really liked him. It was a great concert.

I associate David Bowie and his music with some of the best, worst, and most interesting times of my own life...the songs were, at times, a soundtrack for my own personal life movie.

To a lot of people, myself included, David Bowie seemed ageless. Almost immortal.

He's Stardust forever now.

In my formative years of rock and roll discovery there were 2 albums that really opened my eyes to the diversity in the world of rock. The first was the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" and the second was Bowie's "Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars".

Bowie always had a cool, confidence that was ever present in his music. He charted new waters and was totally unapologetic. Few artists are bigger than life. He was bigger than life.

"Aladdin Sane" (a lad insane) no way, He was amazingly smart, talented and gifted in both music and business.

Jimmy Fallen did a spoof on him Friday night, talking about his new album. And I googled it then and listened to his new single Lazerus, It's to deep for me. He looked so frail in the video.

Another GREAT from my generation has passed!

I remember first seeing Bowie on the late night music shows in the '70s. I found him odd but entertaining.

I didn't really develop a liking for his music until the album "Station to Station". My favorite Bowie song is "Stay". The combination of stunning guitar work and his ironic vocals is arresting. Back in the day, I put together a killer sound system from the PX system in Korea. Through deft manipulation of my equalizer, reverb and processor, I could make the opening guitar licks on "Stay" ring like a bell. Only my ESS PS8a loudspeakers did it justice.

After his "Modern Love" period, he moved off into territory less interesting to me, but he was always a performer of consummate skill.

Years ago, "The New Republic" ran an article on Madonna in which her constant changes of "persona" were remarked upon. She was compared, not at all favorably, with Bowie who'd pioneered it. The difference between them was that Bowie's chameleon act was a joke WITH his fans, Madonna's a joke ON them.

I'll have to come home tonight and play "Stay"...

I've always enjoyed his music. This was an incredible heartfelt performance by him that stands out for me.

It's a sad time of the year... First Ian Kilmister (Motörhead), then Wayne Rogers, Angus Scrimm (Phantasm) and now David Bowie... sad sad sad... may they all rest in peace!

Always remember David Bowie as "Jareth, the Goblin King" :)

Huge loss that affects me personally. One of my best buddies in the 1970s was a massive Bowie fan, and we were always taking new records to each other's homes to play, but with him it was always Bowie. Both were taken too early.

As ever, the BBC did a nice photo history. David Bowie: A life in pictures - BBC News

Loved his music. Loved that he took a chance on backing Lou Reed's solo career.

Really admire he was private and dignified in the face of terminal illness, kept plying his trade, and surprised us all one last time.
