David Soul Dead: 'Starsky & Hutch' Star Was 80

David Soul, who starred as Sergeant Kenneth Richard "Hutch" Hutchinson in the TV series "Starsky & Hutch," died Thursday, his wife announced on his website. He was 80.

"David Soul — beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother — died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family," she wrote. "He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist, and dear friend. His smile, laughter, and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched."

In addition to "Starsky & Hutch," Soul starred in the Western series "Here Comes the Brides" and movies like "Magnum Force," "Salem's Lot" and more. He was also a singer and released several albums in the '70s and '80s, and the No. 1 single "Don't Give Up on Us."

I remember him more for Salem's Lot and Here Come the Brides. Don't recall ever watching Starsky & Hutch - just wasn't my thing.

Also, not many people can say they hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but he did.

We always watched "Blasky & Scutch", as we called it. Hot guns, hot cars, and some hot babes too. He was perfect in Magnum Force. RIP.

In the late 1980's he had a TV series called "Unsub", playing an FBI agent in charge of a serial killer squad. It lasted less than one season, but it turned out to be ahead of its time. Twenty years later and it would have fit perfectly with all the crime procedurals and serial killer shows.

He also played bank robber Michael Platt in the TV movie about the 1986 Miami gunfight, and starred in a TV movie about World War Three.

Last role I remember seeing him in was as a victim in an episode of "Lewis" on PBS.

Mid 70's to 1979 they were the forerunners to Crockett and Tubbs for the uber cop partners on TV. Dated, but still cool and the choice of weapons and cars were top drawer for the times. Never missed it.

Mid 70's to 1979 they were the forerunners to Crockett and Tubbs for the uber cop partners on TV. Dated, but still cool and the choice of weapons and cars were top drawer for the times. He did to me. It wasn't Clint's 44 I admired in "Magnum Force" it was that Python "Davis" carried. It was one of the reason's I always wanted a Python. I eventually got two actually, and a Model 29 of course.

My wife and I watched Magnum Force just last night, we said, in memory of David Soul. I like it better than Dirty Harry. I know...Blasphemy!

I've never seen an episode either, but he was still one of my favorite actors...I liked his portrayal of a renegade cop in "Magnum Force" and just recently caught the episode of "Crime Story" in which he played a kidnapped doctor...RIP indeed......Ben

"Magnum Force" came out in 1973 but I didn't
see the picture until 1979. My reaction was the
same as yours. S&W a year later issued the great
Model 586! And being a S&W guy, I was hooked
with the bonus that the 586 was cheaper.

Either way, I always liked Soul and did enjoy
"Starsky and Hutch."

Is magnum force the movie where the main character loads smg mags from a black velvet canister full of loose rounds ?
That impressed my young mind , I had to save all week to buy a box of 22lr !

Has nothing to do with David Soul , Clint Eastwood, or "Magnum Force" itself, but Hollywierd's penchant for sowing damaging depictions of suppressors by showing a .357 Python using a half-twist mount 'silencer' on a revolver barrel and reducing the shots to a whispering "pffft" that could barely be heard in a parking garage. That kind of mis-information does irrevocable damage to the truth of such things to the ignorant public with no practical knowledge. The other side fights with ginned up emotional pleas based on falsehoods, misrepresentations, and outright lies. Hard to convince someone who wants to believe such drivel otherwise.


Other than that, the gun handling in the movie wasn't bad for the most part and Soul played the bad guy pretty well.
