So I'm getting ready to take the plunge and but one of those fancy Yeti Ice Chests-the ones that will keep ice for 10 days(even though as my wife reminds me that the longest I've ever had an ice chest in the boat without adding ice was about 48 hours at the camp in the dead of winter :D). Getting tired of replacing the Igloo's every 3-4 years.
Anyway, As I compare, and measure for the boat I come to realize that the labels regarding how many quarts are basicly being pulled out of thin air!!! After looking at the inside dimensions and taking a caculator to it and looking up on the net to find out that a liquid quart consists of 57.75 cubic inches, I made the fololowing observations:
Yeti 105 qt actually is 85.8 quarts based on cubic inch measurement
The Yeti 85 qt measures to 82.889 qts
The Yeti 75 measurews 65.038 qts
The Yeti 65 measures to 60.77922 qts

These are all the Tundra series.

I found an new old stock Yeti Roughneck 120 qt (the old Icey Tek) that measures in at 115.425 qts that is $125 cheeper than the "105 quart" Tundra above.
Same thing with the Engel Ice Chests-the biggest external dimension I can handle on my boat is the "80 quart" size which measures out to 70.077 qts for the same price as the old stock Icey Tek.
Looks like I'm buying the old Icey Tek!!!

Interesting exercise

Then you gotta deduct the thickness of all them there bottles and you will find that your cooler will only hold a 6 pack.
have a great day!

Are any of the lids concave? :D

Yes, in fact! Of two Yeti ice chests, both labeled as 25 quart capacity, the "Roughneck" model has thick deep lid that intrudes into the oblong space of the interior. The other "Sherpa" model has a concave lid and somewhat different shape, and while it may have the same nominal capacity, I believe the "Roughneck" has superior insulation, especially because there's more of it in the lid. Both are excellent, and vastly superior to even my "extreme duty" Igloo. These coolers are sinfully expensive, but worth every penny if you need to hold ice for any extraordinarily long time. I still had ice cubes for cooling drinks after five days of what in most places passes for summer weather on Memorial Day weekend, starting out with 14 lbs. of cubes, 5 lbs. of CO2 (dry) ice, lots of ever expanding insulation as the cubes were consumed (to prevent/delay the C02 ice from sublimating). These super-coolers are a godsend when camping in 110 degree weather...!

It sounds like the ice chest measurements are displacement, not capacity.

Kinda a float your boat thing....

A fella can buy a LOT of ice for what those things cost...but I'm not a lawyer... :D

Indeed, you can buy a lot of ice for the price of these ice chests, but ... when you're in circumstances in which ice can't be replenished, and when the ice you start with is the ice you end up with, the ability to preserve it may be invaluable.

Over my long and now long-abandoned protests, the AZ Game & Fish Dept. has opened bear seasons ever earlier, so that now you may be hunting in August, when daytime temps are still approaching 100 degrees, in some hunt units. Kill a bear in these temps, and ice quickly becomes a very valuable commodity...

Hey Caj,
Business a bit slow? Seems like you may have quite a bit of free time on your hands.;)

Probably the same guy figures the size of coolers figures the size of 2x4s.
He's also, most likely, a big fan of Glen Close or his sister Glenn

Last spring I met a guy who was very happy with his, it was about 50 qt. I believe. I got the urge to buy one till picked one up in a store, they are very heavy even empty. Now when I load it up with ice and fish it would really be a job to move.

Man! Those things really are obscenely expensive, aren't they?

I'm in the market for a new cooler for the car. I go to shoots and am outside all day long. Sure, I can go in the Clubhouse and, if the line is not too long, I can get a Gatoraid or something else, but it's real convenient to have a cooler with water, sodas and whatever else in the car.

Even the smaller ones are out of sight on price. Techni Ice (if I got the name right), have some they CLAIM are better and a bit cheaper, but the smallest one I found was over $150 shipped.

I guess I'll just buy a bag of ice at the Stop N Rob each morning and use the old cooler.
