Is there a reference for S&W semi-auto model numbers?

Does the catalog have a reference? I had difficulty finding it.

TenMan,
There's no single reference that will help, although the factory did put out a magic decode wheel for the Third Generation family in the 1990 timeframe (that's a guess) that will help. Unfortunately they've changed things around so much (with the addition to the Value Series) and other exceptions that it's not a complete tool. Here is what they look like.

I'd think getting a copy of the SCS&W V3 would be a better bet.

Wow! That complicated.

I have a copy of SCS&W version 3. I'll dig into it deeper and see if I can find something. I was thinking that the numbers in certain positions had particular meaning.

Thanks, that helps some but the 6906 breaks the mold. It doesn't fit any of the designations other than the X9XX for caliber.

Check out the link. World Guns
I have found a lot of info on many different makes of guns. Once you're there click on the handguns link near the top of the left hand column. Then cursor down to USA and open the Smith & Wesson page.
