In need (okay, in want) of a new wheel gun, 2.5 .357. Trying to make the decision between a 60 and a 649. Not ever near any gun shows so I figure a new one will be on the menu. The new lock isn't a worry to me, I have a 686 2.5 that I love, just want something a bit more concealable in office wear. I like the idea of still being able to use as a single action. Pros and cons from any and all?

I suppose any gun that suits you will do for your needs.

My favorite wheel gun is a Model 66 but I love the four inch barrels. Not much more difficult to conceal, better accuracy and I consider it to have less recoil.

I applaud your saying the IL would not bother you. It should not bother anyone.

Between the 60 and the 649 I'd go with the 649. I like the no-snag profile of the 649 better, even if it's not going to be pocket-carried.

I posed the same question in another independant forum and they're leaning towards the Ruger sp101 over the Smiths. Rugers are great guns but just don't have the options/weight/size I'm looking for but do have a more affordable price tag. I'm leaning towards the 649....another trip to the store is in order......

I've had my 649 for a couple of years and love it. It handles full load 357's just fine and shooting 38's, even +P's is nothing but a pleasure. The option of SA or DA in a no snag pocket cannon is what brought me to the 649 in the first place. Never dreamed it would be such a sweet shooting gun. I added the CT Laser Grips with very good results, the Enhanced Pancake from Ray at Lobo seals the deal for me. Definitely my favorite carry piece.

Basically you need to figure out which model is best for you. If you intend to throw the gun in a pocket holster or a coat pocket, your best bet would be the 649. My personal preference would be the 60 because it is slightly smaller, lighter and I just like the external hammer. My personal choice would be a lightly used (95 + % condition) 60-7 made in the mid 1990's as I truly believe it is the best version of the M60 Smith ever made.

As far as the .357 in a J frame is concerned, I think you will soon find that the J frame while capable of shooting the cartridge, is not really practical. Too much muzzle blast, recoil, and slow follow up shots to deal with. The actual muzzle velocity of a 357 magnum (Rem, Win, Fed) out of a 2" tube is not a lot more than the 158 gr. BUFFALO BORE +P LSWCHP that is much more manageable! I have personally chronographed the BB +P's form my 2" Chief's and it clocks a true 1040 fps and 361 foot pounds of energy. The much more difficult to handle 357's won't give you much more, and the new versions of the Chief's Special are larger and heavier guns than the older 60-s.

If you are truly interested in carrying a .357 Magnum, I would suggest stepping up to an older Model 65 3" bbl. which is heavier, larger, and will give you better velocities and less muzzle flash than the 2" light weight gun. At least you could justify the cartridge in that gun.

Just one man's opinion, but you asked.
