Got a Mossy 590A1 that shoots high @ social encounter ranges . Only has the front bead sight . Since the Fed LE FC round is my choice of ammo I'd like either a set of express sights or Ghost Ring rear preferably night sights . What is your preferred sighting system ?

Sniper Country evaluated four sights for the Mossberg 590A1 and their top pick for the best Mossberg 500 sight goes to the Meprolight Mossberg Tru-Dot Night Sight.

Amazon has this for less than $23, you really can’t beat the price of the Meprolight Mossberg Tru-Dot Night Sight.

Here is the article...

Here is another option from Luckygunner using Magpul...

Chris also features a 14" 590A1 in another article.

A bead for speed, there's nothing faster for SD. In my experience all
short barreled shotguns with a bead shoot high due to the rear sight
being the top of the receiver. If this concerns you the best solution
would probably be the bead on a short ramp to bring it up to the level
of the receiver. Look at the bead sight on the factory 18" barrel of the
Remington 870 Express for an example of the elevated bead sight. At
home defense distance a slightly high point of impact shouldn't really
matter.

Bead an Ghost Ring. I found that when I became competent in Skeet the sights became an after thought.

Go to the local skeet range, or Sporting Clays range and practice on moving targets. When you learn to hit a 4" target at 45 to 60 MPH and 30 yards away, your other shot sighting problems just don't seem to exist any longer.

Slug guns are used like rifles, and need rifle type sights.

Most PD's are shying away from the scatter gun mentality (except for riot use) because of liability. There is a lesson right there!

My favorite shotgun (riot gun) I was ever issued was a Highstandard with rifle sights. They finally took that away from me when they standardized with some fancy Mossbergs. The Mossbergs are nice but the Highstandard and I had become pals. Prior to the Highstandard I'd always been issued the standard 870s with bead, which was fine, I guess. I miss the Highstandard but then I didn't actually own it, so...

If you are shooting "low recoil" loads switch to the regular higher speed loads to bring POI down.

Ammo is Fed LE127 00 with the Flite Control wad . Rifle type sights with a ramped front sound like the ticket . As is have to do the belly button / crotch hold for center mass 7 - 20yds . Would rather have sights that shoot my ammo to POI/POA the same . Yes I can hit a moving target with a shotgun . My Father was a competitive Skeet / Trap shooter & had me shooting clay pigeons @ 12 years old . Appreciate the info .

For the distances involved for me with a defensive shot gun just the bead on the end is fine. I have two short barrel 12G Mossies That goes for slugs or 00 buck.

For the record I have a lot of shot gun shooting under my belt and years of hunting!

Shot NSSA 4 gun for a few years, some trap and now back to shooting none competitive skeet.

All the SD shotguns I have ever looked at are not designed nor dimensioned like a bird gun is.
It is little wonder the bead does not work well.
If the gun was stocked for the average man to wing shoot, you could hit a human silhouette, center mass at 20’ without ever even looking at the bead.

At realistic ranges for home defense, precise sighting is not going to be an issue. If I had to use sights to hit an intruder center mass at twenty feet, I'd use a rifle.

I have an older 590 that came with the plain bead. A few years ago I added the factory Ghost Ring Sights. These are excellent sights. The rear sight screws right on with the existing holes. However, the front sight does have to be soldered.
I've found that zeroing the sight at 50 yards for slugs also puts them dead on with buckshot at closer ranges.

I understand what you mean. That FC load is not too far removed from a slug out to 30+ yds. I would want to hit POA myself.
Only solution other than holding low would be a ghost ring and or different front sight.

With a bead up front the rear sight is your eye. Learn to cheek the stock more, or lower the stock comb. Alternatively, a larger bead might help.

Took a defensive shotgun class at TDI

Tactical Shotgun – Tactical Defense Institute - Tactical, Firearms Training, pistol, rifle, shotgun

We shot slugs out to 100 yds. with a bead sighted shotgun. I was able to keep all rounds on an IDPA target from the standing and kneeling positions. Two Columbus, Ohio instructors that were in attendance talked about incorporating it into there departments training. They were impressed with their shooting and felt that it would add another option for their officers.

Do not feel that you are at a disadvantage if your combat shotgun isn't equipped with the latest gizmo, it is still the most formidable weapon available to the civilian for self protection.
