John M. Browning did this (sort of) with the Winchester rifle back in the 19th century. I would, however, think that a recoil operated rather than a gas operated system would be more workable, i.e. Webley-Fosbury. That being said almost anything of a purely mechanical nature is possible if you are willing to invest the resources in making it happen. The question them becomes, Why would you want to do such a thing? Wouldn't it also tend to blast gas back in the operator's face?

I was thinking… what if you were to put a micro gas block on a revolver barrel; port the barrel, weld the block & run a D.I tube along the upper side which would make contact with a gas key paddle welded to the hammer? By closing the block one could simply switch back to da/sa.

Webley Fosberry...........Solved your problem 100 years ago.........With a more simple design.
