as a toolmaker with Rockwell International we used Starrett and Brown and Sharpe
Be very careful on eBay. There are Chinese Starrett knockoffs there, right down to the box. I bought a No 13 6" double square, and the tell tale was no accuracy certificate and the ends of the blade were rough and not square. I did get my money back to go buy one from a machine tool place; same price as the eBay knockoff, just took longer to get it.

Starrett has been declining in quality over the last 30 or so years. Mitutoyo and Brown & Sharpe have kept a high standard over the years. The old Starrett tools that they built their reputation on are very good. New ones may be OK, maybe not.

Go on eBay and search for Starret or Brown & Sharp Squares! As I have stated many many times on this Forum, you can get a beautifully made Starrett or Brown & Sharp square for a fraction of what a new one would cost. Many of the used ones were well cared for and are in pristine shape. No need to buy foreign and no need to pay a lot to get a superior tool. That is how I have purchased many Machinists and Mechanics tools including Snap-on at less than half price - and YES Snap-on still honors the warranty (despite what some of the Truck tool guy's will tell you)!
Try Shars or Grizzly.
FWIW, I bought a Shars V-mic ($119) for measuring 5 sided S&W bore slugs about 5 years ago, and it still zeroes perfectly on the standard that came with it.

Shars is decent stuff, it isn't inspection room stuff.
We have a few items that we consider shop tools. They work fine, feel decent, and are a decade old. I also like the dial calipers much better than most economy brands.
For used stuff, I like Lufkin, Starrett, Brown and Sharpe, and Mitutoyo.
