I am a recent member of the forum and notice that there seems to be a practice of substituting Xs for the last two or three numbers of the serial number of guns posted on the forum.
I am mystified as why this should be so. I can quite understand that members may not wish to tell the whole world what firearms they own but they have already done that by posting them and I cannot see how concealing the full serial number offers any further protection. Are they all just following other posts like sheep or is there a sensible reason?

Just like some people selling cars on ebay choose to block out their license plates in the pics. Whatever helps them sleep at night.

Interesting how some members know exactly how other members should think and act.

And they can even practice long-range psychoanalysis over the internet!

If you can take the time to listen to this, it pretty much explains it.

That doesn't mean that this is the problem in EVERY case of serial number obstruction, so you may need to study THIS also for further explanation:

For purposes of discussion (like ship dates) the full SN isn't needed.

I don't consider myself paranoid, but in my opinion the only ones who need to know the full information is myself and the dealer filling out the paperwork. Oh, and Roy Jinks can know the full number for historical letters too. In all other situations, why does anyone else need to know, and why should I volunteer the information?

I guess for the same reason that some members don't provide their location information in their profile.

To the original poster:

Could it be the black helicopters? Seriously. I mean, now that you posted here, you probably already have your own satellite. And the next time you go to the dentist, a device will be implanted. Oh, and don't forget about that GPS locator injected into your arm the next time you get a flu shot. Seen any unmarked panel trucks (does that show my age?) or vans outside your house lately?

:)
