Where my cousin lives up the road from me in Henderson County NC, a Deputy sheriff was killed today. A Deputy for eight years, Marine Corp veteran, and father of two young children.
The perpetrator was breaking into a parked car at 3am, when the cars owner spots the break-in, arms himself, and confronts the perps. The perpetrator is now armed with a handgun stored in the vehicle by the owner, and opens fire on the owner with his own gun.
After LEOs arrive, the perpetrator pretends to surrender but suddenly retrieved the handgun and shoots the Deputy in the head.
Something to consider if your inclined to leave firearms marginally secured.
Rest in peace Deputy Hendrix.

Sad day. Prayers for his family and fellow officers.

After having experienced similar non-homicidal cases at work over the years, I've mentioned the dangers of storing firearms in vehicles here on the forum many times. I get shouted down and thrown under the bus every time.

Say the name Ryan Hendrix........

AND I'LL SAY IT AGAIN.....DON'T LEAVE A FIREARM IN YOUR VEHICLE

Good point, even up here where the only time they are in my vehicle is when I'm hunting they are under lockdown.
RIP and condolences to officer Hendrix family and dept.

Always a very sad thing. We had an officer killed in the middle of town a few years back, while serving a warrant. His partner killed the perp. That's when it struck home that we have really bad people right here in our little town.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Officer's family, friends and Department.

I've been saying this for years. But some people around here keep insisting that they are not responsible for the actions of a criminal.
I couldn't live with myself if my improperly stored firearm was used to commit such a crime because I was too lazy.

This young man certainly deserved better.

Next county over. I happened to be speaking with a young man I know yesterday morning, whose father is a detective in Hendersonville...and who, (the son), is now himself applying to become a deputy in my county.

RIP deputy. We are diminished.
