Desert Eagle 10mm? Do what now??

.

That looks like you didn't get away from boutique ammo to me. ;)

.

Yeah, but I would have to buy it either way if I wanted full-power ammo, and .45 Super is more available because it's less popular.

I have a Desert Eagle in 10mm, no wait, a DOUBLE Eagle in 10mm. Colt. Heh heh. My bad.
Funny, My eye initially read the title as Double Eagle as well

I have many 10MM Auto firearms in addition to my Double Eagle. Only a few of them are the 1911 platform

I built one of my favorites about 4 summers ago

Longer barrels produce exceptional increases in performance, so I am fond of long slides

OP sorry for the thread drift

I have a Double Eagle First Edition in 10MM Auto

I actually bought 3 of the First Editions for me and my family members. A buddy of mine was the main distributor for them so I picked my serial numbers . . . 737, 747 and 757.

To COLT, the First Edition is the first 1000 pieces. First Editions are roll-marked differently and came in a soft case with 3 mags, holster and a mag pouch.

I have no clue beyond the first one thousand. You have more knowledge than I on that issue, since these were started on the DT serial number prefix, what number is your gun?

I also have a 45ACP Double Eagle LW Officers that I carried in an ankle rig for quite some time.

My stainless Double Eagle Office 45 was stolen with my suburban back in 96

It starts with DTO(letter O) 4[zero]XXX, so DTO40.... stamped dot-matrix. I initially though there were no first editions on the 10mm and it came out after the 45 was upgraded. Been a lot of confusion on this subject and I never got any clear answers.

I bought it as clamed to be unfired second hand without a box and I think only one mag. I had plenty of 1911 10mm mags so it wasn't a big deal. Bought it in '95 for $600 IIRC.

To the OP, I want the top one in your picture, what are the specs on that one? What model is it?

I believe your referring to the 45 acp version of the same 10 mm 1911. Its the same specs as a Government model however it has a steel guide rod and front strap checkering. I have both models and all of the are some if not the best 1911s for the price. I also have the Commander version too which has a bull barrel.

Magnum Research can abuse the name however they please, but a Jericho is still a Jericho, and a 1911 is still a 1911. If there ever was a gun not in need of borrowed plumes, it's the 1911.

dandyrandy: Guns (and picture) are very nice!

In all honesty, the first time that I ever heard of the "Desert Eagle 1911" I assumed that it was going to be a massive 1911 like the old LAR Grizzly Mark V chambered in .50AE or at least a Desert Eagle that took styling cues from the 1911. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of folks were thinking the same thing. Instead, it's just another 1911, which is fine, but the Desert Eagle moniker does nothing for it and just makes it sound like something that it's not.

If all I saw was the photos my first reaction would have been Kimber. And, as long as it doesn't have that ugly external extractor I'll call it a 1911.

It could have been one of the Grizzly Mark I Long Slides, though they were chambered for the measly little 45 Winchester Magnum.

10 1/2" of barrel

While LAR did make a 10MM Auto conversion for the standard Grizzlies (along with several other calibers), I have never seen one for the Long Slide.

The only other barrel that I have ever seen for the Long Slide is chambered for the 357/45 GWM cartridge

I believe they have changed the name to the Magnum Research 1911 however my 10mm says Desert Eagle on it and so does some of my 45 1911s. The name Desert Eagle actually refers to there many semi auto pistols however the 50 AE semi auto is what comes to mind for everyone. I also had a little tiny Desert Eagle pocket rocket in 380 acp. I would love to have another one of those that was a great little 380 auto! I have to admit I have never had a bad firearm from Magnum Research ever!

It's a shame that LAR isn't around anymore and that nobody ever picked up the Grizzly 1911s, I'd like to think that they could sell as long as they were offered by a company who also sold ordinary pistols, so they weren't reliant solely on the sales of magnum pistols to remain financially stable.

@dandyrandy
I'm used to Magnum Research using the "Desert Eagle" name to sell other pistols, but at least the Jericho (a.k.a. the Mini Desert Eagle) shares aesthetic similarities to the Desert Eagle and the Micro Desert Eagle took some styling cues from it as well, whereas the Desert Eagle 1911s just look like so many other 1911s on the market, namely the Kimber Raptor and Taurus PT1911.
That being said, the fact that they've dropped "Desert Eagle" from their line of 1911s shows that it really wasn't doing anything for the marketability of their 1911s.

Ya LAR Grizzly needs to make a come back however in the mean time there is the 460 Rowland conversion. I like that better because you can take any good quality 1911 and shoot 45, 45 super, or 460 Rowland out of it. Its what i use when I have to hunt tyrannosaurs in the bush. I would like to do a review on that too just some much stuff I want to cover for ya'll. Like I want this good info to get out there on this firearms stuff!

My issue with .460 Rowland conversions is that they call for a fixed compensator. How exactly are you supposed to break down your 1911 for cleaning if the compensator is fixed in place on the end of the barrel?

Furthermore, I find it difficult to believe that all it takes to make an ordinary 1911 that was designed for .45 ACP which operates at a mere 21,000-23,000psi capable of safely and reliably handle .460 Rowland which operates at 40,000psi is some heavier springs and a compensator.
Granted they've been around for a very long time, but how hard has anybody actually run a 1911 with a .460 Rowland conversion? How many rounds has anyone put through one of them?

I know that they're probably perfectly safe and all, but it's just not for me... I'm not into converting firearms to handle more powerful cartridges than they were designed to shoot, hence why I opted for an H&K USP45 Elite to shoot .45 Super as opposed to converting a 1911 or some other .45 ACP pistol. (Although I would be far more comfortable converting a .45 ACP to fire .45 Super since the pressure difference is much closer between the two.)

Ya LAR Grizzly needs to make a come back

Not going to happen

LAR licensed the Grizzly design from the patent holder, Perry Arnett. LAR's founder did a few modifications/improvements

Perry Arnett only lived about 30 minutes South of me

When Clinton was going after all the manufacturers with threats of prosecution, LAR agreed to never make another Grizzly pistol in exchange for immunity from prosecution. As we all know now, there never was any prosecution

Perry could not produce the pistols because he did not own the rights.

Perry has since passed away. The family is probably the current owner of the design. I suppose someone could try and buy the rights

I had to Google what a Magnum Research Mountain Eagle was because I'd never heard of one before, and that is without a doubt the absolute junkiest-looking .22 Target Pistol that I've ever seen in my entire life.

I have literally NEVER used this statement before because it has always struck me as immature, condescending, and ignorant, but here it is quite an apt statement; That thing looks like a toy.
Seriously, it doesn't look like a real Target Pistol, it looks like a cheap plastic toy version of a Target Pistol designed by someone who has even never owned one and is just making one based off of a foggy memory of Target Pistols he had seen in fliers for sporting goods store. Good grief, it that thing terrible-looking. Wow!

If anyone here owns one, loves it, and actually feels that it's a good Target Pistol, then I beg your pardon, but I'm stunned by just how cheap it looks.
