Sad and depressing; too many places to assign the blame to make much sense of it.

The saddest part is no one seems to be learning anything from it.
 
I feel sick to my stomach when I revisit images of my once great home town. So much waste.
 
Man, Detroit is starting to look like Sarajevo during their civil war back in the 90s. All that's missing are the shell holes from artillery, but give it a few months and I'm sure they'll be there...
 
When the people who pay the taxes no longer feel it is safe or economical where they live and work they leave and take their tax money and the jobs they created with them. There are solutions to situations such as this but most of them are not politically correct or they violate government rules or regulations.
 
I watched a utube video (sorry no link. I can't find it) of someone driving around abandoned Detroit neighborhoods. Two things really struck me:

Most of the houses looked like they had been really nice houses in their prime, lots of very large ornate houses. Old neighborhoods where I live, in Alabama, have cheaper, much smaller, dilapidated houses.

There were a lot of abandoned boats in Detroit neighborhoods. Of course the motors were missing, but lots of good-sized fiberglass boats just sitting outside empty houses.

Likely explanation... Lots of high paying jobs disappeared when the golden age of Detroit auto manufacturing ended. Workers left their foreclosed homes and went elsewhere looking for work. Left houses and boats behind. Ghetto residents moved in, destroyed the houses and public buildings. No way to steal or pawn or use a fiberglass boat. The boat is impervious to weather. So it just sits.

What survives from once proud Detroit? Boats and the cool nickel plated ex-Detroit Police revolvers you often see for sale.

Weird.
 
When I was working, I had to drive through some of those neighborhoods. Now, I don't go south of 8 mile rd.
 
The pic of the clock at Cass Technical School interested me. My Dad is a retired tool and die maker who went to trade school there in the 1960's. He was working for Bower Roller Bearing in Detroit, which later was bought by Federal Mogul. Bower's paid for his schooling at Cass, and made him an apprentice toolmaker. I've also heard that John Z. DeLorean went to school at Cass as well. I wondered what had happened to the place after all these years.
 
Detroit has thr largest Masonic Temple in the world, but no one wants to go into that neighborhood any more.very sad...

Saw on the news this evening Mayor Bing saying the city has only enough money for one more week.No idea what happens then ...
 
Baltimore is only a half-step behind Detroit: Blighted communities, thousands of abandoned, boarded-up homes, a large population of drug addicts, and violent, out-of-control crime.

I was a firefighter in Baltimore for 30 years, and during that time I watched the city of my birth, which I remembered so fondly from my childhood, spiral downward steadily...it was sad to see. :-(
 
It is sad. Everyday more of the productive citizens get fed up with the crime and move, leaving only the criminals and the welfare moochers. I have been working here since 1990 and the changes I have seen just in last ten years have been dramatic. It will not improve until there is a top down change in the leadership, from the mayor to the council to the department heads.
 
I did some service work in Detroit 15 years ago and have not been back since. There were some scarey places back then I drove through and only prayed my service truck didn't break down. Some really nice neighborhoods too with nice homes and mansions even and wonder how they've faired now.
I live 20 miles east of Flint, Michigan and that city has also gone downhill over the years with the loss of GM plants and jobs there. They used to receive much tax money from the plants and non-resident income tax from GM employees no longer working there.
My inlaws still live in Flint and their neighborhood has gone down too. We worry about them but it's home for them and they won't leave.
 
Memphis went from the cleanest city in the United Staes in the 50s to second behind Detroit on most every list. The Pyramid built in 1990 at the cost of over 90 million taxpayer dollars has been abandoned since 2004. 30 million is still owed on it. Bass Pro might put something in it but it's still only talk. It goes on and on.
 
I'd love to be a scavenger for some of those antique architectural items shown. Bet there's a fortune available for the taking. Somebody should save it before it goes completely to dust.
 
Yup! Cant forget to be PC here. I was a IAM member myself for over 35 years and shouldnt and wont bad mouth them. My last 10 to 15 years OTJ we took many cuts to survive. Not all those citys that your talking about hoasted the huge auto industry like most of detroit depended on. I had family that worked in the industry before I was born. A large percentage of the men in my area of wisconsin would commute comeing home every few weekends from the plants. There wasnt a job anywhere around us that could compete with the wages and benneys those guys got by a thrid to half as much.
There no doubt is lesser contributeing factors that became more prominate as the auto industry waned, but I defy anyone to show any reason that could possibly be more obvious than the one I stated.
I have been on both sides of the fence or line. As a guard and still being a union member in a defense plant when there were strikes I was required to work by the taft hartly act or law. We werent allowed to strike.
War story time. Once I was faceing the pickets. We had one real nasty one that one of my partners wanted to choke out for his antics and insults. I said john, you go and cool off, I will handel this area. This charactor verbaly cussed me out for working, grabbing himself like michael jackson, going through antics etc. This was about 03.00 AM. We had flood lights set up, a table for the picketts with coffee and doughnuts that us guards chipped in $20s apiece each week for PC.
This woman chided the idiot saying not to do that. Why, those nice guards bought that roll you are eating! I really wished she hadnt said that! He went in a tirade what I could do with that roll and pitched it at me. If he tried another twenty times he couldnt have scored as well as he did! I got jam on my face and uniform from about 20 yards.
I stayed PC too!
 
What an absolute embarassment. I find the abandoned churches, schools and police station most disturbing. These places are the foundations of a community. Detroit is nothing more than one of the biggest failures in our history.

Good post. The people who are left in Detroit have just what they deserve.
 
This is why I bailed on Michigan about 25 years ago. It was pretty obvious then where the state was heading. Love the state, I visit maybe once a year but only the up north areas.

The interesting thing is to compare say Texas and Michigan and ask why is Houston/Texas doing so well and Mi/Detroit doing so poorly?
 
I used to live at 7mile-John R,and also on Robinwood/w lantz.Even back in 1978 there was a lot of houses burned-vandalized.We never gave it much thourght,,,that was what we was used to.But after looking at a lot of video's on y-tube showing the very same streets we used to play on,I now find it to be a waste land.
Gone are the good times-replaced with drugs-gangs and punks.I for one dont see how this once great City can rebound.Just read the info on the area-utter demise and destruction.
Even down town is void of people.Used to be so many people on Woodward Av,now it's near empty.

You don't seem to hear me when I say-

I don't give a damn about being PC.
I simply also don't give a damn about hearing the same old rags and rants about the same old subjects that have nothing to do with S&W.
So, I'm not asking anyone to have the "correct" view on any topic, I'm telling you there are many topics we simply won't discuss because they result in many fights, require a lot of Moderator time, put a lot of people off, and do NOTHING to further the discussion of all things S&W.

I figured this thread would go political and/or racial when I first saw it, but thought I would give it a chance. I was right, so many posts have been deleted.

Check the rules now and then, folks. The list of banned topics is near the top. We won't be getting close to discussing those topics. If that stresses anyone out, find another place.
