I've been researching a pocket 38 and have been going back and forth between a 642 and 638.

I stopped in my LGS the other day and found they had a used 642-1 for sale.

After several trips back and examining the gun, I found it was in real nice condition. Walked out with it for $300 which I felt pretty good about.

What say the folks on here? Did I get a good deal? Just do okay? Or not really?

I felt good about finding a 640-1 as I did not want the IL, and didn't want to have to find a 642-2 without one necessarily.

Either way I am happy to be the owner of it, and can't wait to get it to the range!

Great choice!!…and $300 Is a bargain. I occasionally carry one that I paid $400 for at a LGS over 5 Years ago. Sold the heavier 640 not long after.

I think you did well, I love the 642, great pocket gun,
Joe

New they are over 500 around here. Used probably 400. I have 2-442's and 3 other J-Frames. If I see one for 300 I'ed buy it.

My most recent deal in the last year was a near new 442 ( unfortunately with the lock) with 2 speed loaders, a cheesy nylon junk holster and speed loader case plus 3&1/2 boxes of factory 38's for $340. Considering what factory 38 ammo goes for ( I reload 38's, huge cost savings- I don't think I have fired a factory round beyond 5 or 6 defense loads to confirm function/POI in decades) I figure I really only paid $250 for the gun. It has run flawlessly, pretty happy with it,and I think I done good.
This was after several weeks of finding and hesitating on some nice older classic J's that sold before I could decide to buy. Did teach me not to hesitate as much anymore. Right now one shop has a 649 ( no lock ) for $500 with again about 200 rounds of factory ammo which is tempting me. I really don't care for stainless, if it were a blued 49 or 38 I would have jumped.

Welcome to the Forum! Yes, you did good with acquiring a 642-1 for $300. I bought a gently used Model 642-2 from my son back in 2010 for $250, and it's been one my EDC handguns since then. It has the lock, but I just ignore it! Here in Florida the weather requires that we wear shorts most of the year and the 642-2 is an excellent pocket revolver. I carry it in either a Malabar Gun Leather bullhide pocket holster or Sticky Holster, and a Tuff Strip with an extra 5-rds. Make sure that you spend some time practicing with that snubby before you carry it. Enjoy!

Assuming the M642 is in good condition both mechanically and cosmetically, $300 is a bargain. Use it well and welcome to the Forum!
