Long story but I got this 19-3 snub for 700 bucks and during the cleaning up I scratched the side plate with a plastic toothbrush! I didn't even feel it happening. I tried mothers and renwax and even 0000 steel wool with oil. It is what it is. Be a good house gun I guess. She was a looker…

If you bought it to use, I'd not be overly concerned - but I really can't imagine how you did that with a toothbrush.

2-1/2" 19s typically fetch pretty good money. The $700 price sounds about right if the gun checks good mechanically.

I don't know how a plastic toothbrush scratched it so bad but it happened and I didn't gorilla the thing.

Not that I think you are lying, I believe that you believe you caused the scratches with a plastic toothbrush but I don't buy it! Either it was scratched before you got it and the fellow somehow temporarily covered it up or you just did not see it. Unless you used something else you're not mentioning here to clean it up or the revolver moved around on a rough surface while cleaning, I feel it must have come that way. IMHO there is no way a nylon toothbrush did that!

Unfortunately those scratch marks are there to stay - no way to polish them out without refinishing the whole revolver. It almost looks like someone removed a little freckling and scratched it up at that time. Cold bluing touch ups usually make it look even worse so you will have to just live with it. Hopefully it is mechanically good and shoots well.

I just looked at the toothbrush. It's got scratches on it. Something must have gotten on it and inbetween it and the side plate. Walnut shell spec or something. I'll probably sell it and try to get my money back. I didn't need another .357 gun right now lol. I ruined my buddies gun and made it right to him.

Yes, side plates are fitted and getting one that matches with the bluing would be almost impossible. Either use it like it is as a carry gun or sell it if it bugs you that much. Do not try and fix it. That usually leads to worse damage and throwing more money ant it isn't the answer. Just wondering, did you put the side plate screws back in the same holes? One looks too deep and the other sits proud.

I did not touch the screws. And it will be left alone. I've done enough damage! lol. It outta be a good shooter

Bits of carbon and/or metal can get embedded in the soft nylon bristles of a toothbrush and then when you scrub with that brush, the embedded debris can scratch whatever is being brushed. Side plates are fitted items, so getting one that drops in might happen, but just like playing the lottery, the odds are not in your favor.

YES - if something like any abrasive was on the toothbrush then it could scratch like that - no doubt. Walnut Shells are quite abrasive - hence the reason it is used for tumbling brass.

While not visually appealing that is a great gun as long as it is mechanically sound and probably worth every dime of the 700. I would keep it and shoot it. They aren't rare but not behind every tree either.

I replaced the rear blade, painted the front and added adapter. I'm VERY happy with this 19 and it ain't going NOWHERE!!
