Greetings everyone.

My friend contacted me today and said a retired LEO's wife is selling a S&W model 55 .45 caliber. The man died a little while ago and she is wanting to sell this revolver. I was very interested and expressed that.

Question:
I'm pretty familiar with S&W's revolvers, but this one. Does anyone know if that could be the model 1955 in .45 ACP? The seller is out of town for a couple of weeks and I have no further info.

Thanks for your help.

Without a little more it's hard to say, but if it is a heavy barrel .45 ACP it would be a Model of 1955 .45 Target almost certainly.

There was a Model 55 which is mentioned in "The Book" (SCW) only as "Experimental" with no description whatsoever. It is listed under revolvers, whatever you can make out of that. I can guarantee the revolver you have been offered isn't it!

I read years ago that S&W had made a run of something like 300 of the Model 1955 45acp revolvers in a 4" barrel with a ramp front sight for some LE Agency. I have never seen one surface anywhere however. I have no idea how they were stamped as far as model either. I would have thought 25-2, but who knows without seeing one.
You surely could not be that lucky.
Keep us posted.

Welcome to the Forum. Another possibility is this is a model 22, misread as 55. There were only a few of these that were stamped as such in the 1950s-'60s, but a modern version known as the 22-4 was also made. It is an N frame, 4" barrel, fixed sights in .45 ACP. Please let us know what you find out.
