Imagine that, a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun.

Seriously fortunate that situation got resolved quickly with the bad guy down for the count. Very sad that he took out an honor guard at the Ottawa war memorial before having his ticket punched.

A Sgt. At Arms who's actually armed....imagine that.

Looks more like a 6906 or something. Something small and concealable. The Sgt. At Arms inside Parliament doesn't exactly wear a utility belt.

RCMP issued 5946 DAO.

You are correct. If that Wiki article said they use the M-5906, it's in error. Wiki takes info from all sorts of sources, and those writing their material are sometimes less than expert.

The Force uses the DA-only model. And theirs have a stylized horse and rider image, like that on their patrol cars.

If you followed the news on that nut in New Brunswick earlier this year, you saw some good photos of them with those S&W 9mm's and also with shoulder-fired arms.

You could see RCMP responding to this incident in Parliament
but most cops that I saw on TV were from the Ottawa city police. Mounties are Federal police.

Personally, I don't like DA-only guns, but they didn't ask my advice, and Canada is rather PC... Cops here in Texas normally carry regular DA-SA autos like the SIG-Sauer line.

I was the USAF liaison cop with RCMP while stationed in Newfoundland and also talked to a Mountie with their famed Musical Ride at the Texas State Fair. My kids enjoyed watching him groom his horse as he talked to us. Pretty nice guy, from Calgary, Alberta.

BTW, I saw a photo of the Parliament Muslim on TV tonight, and he had a Winchester .30-30 in the photo. The talking head just called it a .30 caliber hunting rifle, which he admitted is a legal gun there. It may seem incredible to us, but news people know so little about guns that they may not
recognize a Marlin or Winchester .30-30! Or, he may have been trying to make it sound more menacing. The media loves to do that.

There are a couple of news sites saying that Sgt Vickers retrieved his gun from a lock box in his office so it may well have been a full size gun. On fox news they were saying that Vickers was 6'4" . A full size gun might very well look like a compact model in his hand if this is the case

Canada Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers Hailed Hero Over Gun Attack - NBC News

The Canadian Sergeant-At-Arms was lauded by the members of the Commons with two standing ovations today. Like the start of every session, the Speaker's procession entered the chamber with Kevin Vikers carrying the Mace which symbolizes the authority of the Speaker and the right conferred on the Commons by the Crown to meet and pass laws.

All the Members spontaneously rose and applauded. Kevin Vickers was obviously moved.

Later when the Canadian national anthem was sung, a tear could be seen on his cheek. Then, in a breach of precedent, the Prime Minister thanked him at the end of his speech, went over to him to thank him and then embraced the leaders of the two main opposition parties. Members once again applauded the man who had stood on guard for them.

No doubt the NRA will attempt to show how this proves how the "good guy with a gun" was able to defeat the bad guy and therefore open carry is justified. In reality, when the incident started, Kevin Vickers was only armed with his ceremonial sword. He does not carry a gun in the normal course of his duties but keeps one in his office safely under lock and key:

So let's be clear, in the normal course of his duties, the person in charge of security for the Canadian House of Commons does not carry a gun. Of course guns are used by the Commons and Senate security staff and the RCMP who are responsible for the external security. Vickers' counterpart in the Canadian Senate, responsible for the security of that chamber is the Usher of the Black Rod.
The Sergeant-At-Arms for the Commons is responsible for the security of the House in a tradition that goes back to January 4, 1642.

That does not look like a compact to me. It looks like a 5946.

Texas Star, have you had the opportunity to shoot a DAO 3rd gen Smith?
I didn't like DAO pistols, either, until I tried the 3rd gen Smith DAO.
They have triggers that make a Glock trigger feel like the **** it is.

If you read down into the article, there is a picture of a 5946 with a RCMP patch above it.

I thought that they were phasing the 3rd Gen guns out, but it appears they are not. On another site, I saw a picture of a 5946TSW with an integral rail that appeared to be Melonite. Actually, there's a thread on this forum that has better pictures than the one I saw.

I read at this link the S&W 5906 is official pistol of RCMP. So wonder if that is model of pistol used by Sgt at Arms Vickers to killer terrorist in Canada. Link

Why the contempt for the NRA? All they have been doing for the last 100 years is protect your rights to enjoy / keep / collect / shoot the firearms you enjoy. So please a little respect is in order.

You realize he's quoting a main stream media article and not expressing his own opinion, correct?

The media, as always, has decided that the NRA is the main enemy, not radicals who want to kill innocent people.
