I am looking at buying a new 625 for IDPA shooting. My question is: what is the real diffence between the Performance center and Jerry Miculek revolvers? I have looked through the threads, and see that some people dont like the grips and trigger on the JM.

I had just purchased a used 325 TR and had to return it because the gun would not fire winchester primers. I see that this may be a common problem with the 625's which does make me a little nervous about buying one.

I just want to make sure I get the best gun for me. I do not really want a gun that I have to load special bullets for. I also shoot a 1911 and would like to have a gun that will shoot whatever I put into it. That is the whole point in buying the same caliber.

If anyone has any experiance with either one of these guns please give me your opinion.

Thanks

You do not need to get rid of a good revolver just because it will not fire Winchester primers. A worst case scenario is your having to replace the mainspring and strain screw if they were modified. It should be a simple fix. Some of the PC versions have short cylinders and strange barrel contours. I don't think they are any "better." The better ones are the older -3 and -4 versions. I would keep an eye out for a used one in good condition.

The dealer said he did not want to deal with the 325 issue. He said he just wanted to give me my money back. That is why I am looking for a different gun. It just seems odd that Smith & Wesson would turn out a gun that has any problems what so ever especially in a performance center gun.

I have a 625 JM. Tightest shooting handgun I have ever owned. 5 shots one hole at 50 ft offhand. Does it over and over again. Feed it decent ammo and I'm not talkin premium stuff here, and it just puts em where you are lookin. Great gun.

You need a new gun dealer if he didn't want to deal with a simple problem on a 325.

To answer your question the difference between the 625 PC and 625 JM is the extra work put into the action by the Performance Center staff. The parts of PC guns receive special attention and hand fitting to remove any rough spots with particular empahasis on smoothing out the trigger pull. They are similarly configured with 4" barrels. The grips are also similar in shape but different in color. Grips are a very subjective choice and many shooters change the grips on any new gun to ones that fit their hands better. I own a 625 PC and think it is worth the extra $100(approx.).

If I could find one, I'd go with the 625 JM. However, if all I could find was the 625PC I wouldn't have any problem choosing the 625PC. BTW, I went shooting last weekend and the range used is an S&W Stocking Dealer. When I asked about a 625 they reported they haven't seen any in at least 3 years.

Notable differences between the two are the lighter barrel contour on the PC version and the slightly shorter cylinder. BTW, I find it very odd that S&W is listing the PC as 2 ounces heavier than the 625JM, IMO they have the weights mixed up between the two because that shorter cylinder and lighter barrel should result in the 625PC being lighter.

As for the grips on either, they would get tossed into a drawer before firing one shot. I'd either mount the 500 Mag monogrip or a Pachmayr Decelerator on it because either facotry grip looks way too small for my hands.

625PC = Conventional groove/land rifled barrel, short cylinder, longer barrel tenon to match the short cylinder, no ball lock.

625JM = Regular 625 cylinder, sort of polygonal rifling.

(I have a 625PC but do not have a 625JM, and yes the grips should be replaced ASAP unless you want to try them beforehand.)
